The full ring tour is rated as moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While the main path along Lago di Place Moulin to Prarayer Hut is generally an easy walk suitable for families and strollers, the complete ring tour involves more varied terrain and elevation changes, making it a more challenging experience.
The trail typically starts near the Lago di Place Moulin dam. You'll find parking available in this area, which serves as the primary access point for hikes to Rifugio Prarayer and the surrounding trails.
The best time to hike is generally from late spring to early autumn. In summer, you'll see blooming fireweeds, while autumn offers stunning golden larches. Always check local weather conditions before you go, as alpine weather can change quickly.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially around other hikers, wildlife, and near the hut. Be sure to carry water for your dog, as sources might be limited in certain sections.
No, you do not need a specific permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike this trail. Access to the area is generally free.
You'll experience stunning alpine scenery, including the vibrant turquoise waters of Lago di Place Moulin, majestic mountains, and glaciers. Key highlights include the Mountain panorama from the shores of Lake Place-Moulin and the Prarayer Hut. You might also spot small waterfalls, a 17th-century Rascard monument, and various information points about the area's history.
The terrain is varied. A significant portion follows a dirt road or wide track along Lago di Place Moulin. Other sections of the ring tour involve more typical mountain paths, passing through wooded areas of larches and offering views of glaciers. It's mostly accessible but requires sure-footedness on some parts.
The full ring tour typically takes around 3 hours to complete, covering approximately 9.65 kilometers (6 miles) with about 220 meters (722 feet) of elevation gain.
Yes, the Prarayer Hut is located midway through the hike, offering a convenient spot for rest and refreshments. It typically has a bar and restaurant where you can enjoy a meal or a drink.
Yes, sections of this route are also part of the longer Tour du Cervin and the Panoramica: Ru - Berrié - Place Moulin trails, making it a significant point for multi-day trekkers exploring the wider region.
The main path leading directly to Prarayer Hut along Lago di Place Moulin is an easy walk, accessible even for families with strollers. However, the full 'Ring tour' is rated moderate and might be too challenging for very young children or those not used to longer hikes with elevation changes.
An easy circular hike that I wouldn't do on the weekend or on a public holiday. The lower path is wide, easy to walk and drive on (for cars with the appropriate permit, MTB ...) and accordingly more populated. The upper path is a narrow, but easily accessible hiking trail with a much nicer view of the reservoir, the mountains, the waterfalls and, above all, with a splendor of flowers on the mountain meadows, simply stunning. Those who are extremely not free from giddiness will have to overcome some places or limit themselves to the path below. We saw several marmots on the upper path. Two of them were less than two meters away from us! It was fascinating to watch them so closely.
Very rewarding trekking from the point of view of the landscape. Easy and accessible route without problems. Support points Prarayer refuge. I added or real GPS data because the app at the beginning without data traffic did not record anything.
