Franconian Alb Tour

Cycling

The round tour starts in Lauf an der Pegnitz. You first drive through the Sebalder Reichswald towards Oedenberg. The place is on the Liashöhe, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the area of the Lorenzer and Sebalder Reichswaldes. In Oedenberg Castle, which was first mentioned in 1319 and is now an inviting inn, you can take a break for the first time. The cabbage sausage from the in-house butcher's shop is particularly recommended here.

From here you continue via Tauchersreuth to Beerbach. A little away from the village is one of the most beautiful Gothic hall churches in Middle Franconia. The route takes you over wide fields, through beautiful forests and past picturesque meadows to Neunhof, where you can marvel at three very attractive castles.

It then continues via Bullach, Laipersdorf and Großbellhofen to Schnaittach. The mighty Rothenberg Fortress towers high above this village, which was mentioned in a document as early as 1011, and is well worth a visit. Schnaittach also has a long Jewish history. In the former synagogue there is also a branch of the Jewish Museum Franconia and a small local history museum. In the three Jewish cemeteries you will find Hebrew writings on the gravestones. A walk up to the Kalvarienberg with the baroque church is also worthwhile.

Then you cycle on to Dehnberg: a place that is known today for the "Dehnberger Hoftheater", which is housed in a former agricultural building. It is not far from here to the starting point of the tour in Lauf an der Pegnitz.

Weisses Ross Behringersdorf

Highlight • Restaurant

Franconian hospitality and delicious, traditional cuisine await you at the Hotel-Gasthof Weißes Ross. Thanks to the in-house butcher's shop, everything is "particularly fresh" on the table. And to drink there is a large selection of beers from the traditional Tucher brewery in Nuremberg. I personally can recommend the "Reifbräu alcohol-free" - it tastes almost like a real beer.

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday (2 p.m. to 5 p.m. small menu), closed on Mondays

In Oedenberg Castle you can fortify yourself on your bike tour with delicious food. No matter whether in the idyllic beer garden or in the rustic dining room. There is also a bakery and a butcher's shop with fine Franconian delicacies.

Wiethaler Brewery Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

The Wiethaler brewery in Neunhof, near Lauf an der Pegnitz, can look back on more than 510 years of brewing tradition. To this day, the brewery is one of the most technologically advanced breweries in its size. In order to set the course for a successful future, she relies on quality, commitment and tradition. It is therefore particularly important to the brewers to brew a beer that not only brings pleasure but also fun and joy into the glass.

Dehnberger Hoftheater

Highlight • Monument

The court theater in Dehnberg has existed since 1976. Here you will not only find performances, but also a restaurant that is always open before and after a performance. The jazz morning pint is also particularly popular. You can find the dates on the program: dehnbergerhoftheater.de/spielplan.html.

June 19, 2025, Lauf a.d.Pegnitz - Reichswald - Oedenberg - Burgenstrasse

Today we started at the Pegnitzwiese in Lauf. The tour started at the Heldenwiese, but we couldn't find it at first; our cell phone was in the trunk🙈. Well, to start with, we headed to the Sebalder Reichswald. A multitude of beautiful, shady paths. In Oedenberg, with its beautiful castle, which now houses a restaurant, we noticed the Weiße Ross (White Horse) with its wonderful beer garden. But first, we continued through hop fields and cherry orchards😋. So many wonderful views of the Franconian Alb 🙂! Highlights. Then my husband had a steering problem with the motor🫢. Repeatedly, we had to push sections without push assistance. Suddenly, it was all the way to the 🚗 again. Off to the workshop tomorrow! Not my husband, but the e-bike😅 As a reward, we drove to the Weiße Ross (White Horse). 🍻🍺🍰☕️. There was even hot food in the afternoon 😋😋. The tour is highly recommended!👍

A varied up and down. Quiet streets, wide views over the rolling hills between Schnaittach, Eckental, Behringersdorf and Lauf. I would do the route through the Reichswald differently.
