The specific route described, "Climb to Rifugio Treviso," is approximately 7.66 km long with an elevation gain of about 436 meters, and it typically takes around 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete. However, other routes to the rifugio can vary. A common circular route covers about 17.0 km with 773 meters of elevation gain, taking around 5 hours and 35 minutes.
The trail is generally rated as moderate, requiring a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. While there's mention of an easier, shorter option (around 8.3 km with 554 meters ascent, mostly through woods) suitable for various abilities, the main route involves steeper forest paths. Families with younger children or beginners should consider their fitness levels and perhaps opt for the easier variations.
You'll experience a diverse landscape. The trail starts with forest roads, transitioning to steeper forest paths with switchbacks. Expect to walk through expansive larch and fir forests, alongside flowing brooks, and across lush meadows and alpine pastures. As you gain elevation, you'll be treated to spectacular views of the Dolomite peaks of the Pale di San Martino, including Cima Canali and Cima Wilma. The Val Canali itself is renowned for its beauty.
The main hut at Rifugio Treviso operates from mid-June to late September, and on weekends starting May 1st. This period, particularly late spring through early autumn, offers the most favorable weather conditions for hiking. During these months, you'll find the trails clear of snow and the rifugio open for services.
While specific parking details for this exact trailhead aren't provided, trails in Val Canali typically have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check local signage or park information for the Val Canali area, often near the start of popular routes or access points to the Canali Alpine Hut or Villa Welsperg, which houses the visitor center for the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Dolomites, but it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially within protected areas like the Parco Naturale Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino, to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always carry waste bags and ensure your dog is well-behaved and capable of handling the moderate terrain.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or specific hiking permits required for general access to the trails within the Parco Naturale Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino. However, visitors are expected to respect park regulations, such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and carrying out all trash. Information can be found at the visitor center at Villa Welsperg.
The Treviso Hut in Val Canali, built in 1897, offers 35 beds for overnight stays. It also features a winter room that remains open year-round, providing basic shelter when the main hut is closed. The main hut operates from mid-June to late September and on weekends starting May 1st, offering food and drink services during these times.
Yes, the route intersects with several other notable paths. You'll find sections that overlap with the Alta Via n. 2 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 2, the Dolomites World Heritage Geotrail 36 and 37, and the Troi dei Todeschi. These intersections can offer opportunities to extend or vary your hike if you're looking for a longer adventure.
While the main hut is closed in winter, a winter room at Rifugio Treviso remains open year-round, offering basic shelter. Winter hiking in the Dolomites, especially to a rifugio, requires specialized equipment (snowshoes, crampons, ice axe) and experience with avalanche assessment. It's a significantly more challenging and potentially hazardous undertaking than summer hiking, and conditions can change rapidly. Always check local conditions and forecasts before attempting a winter ascent.
Beyond the stunning natural scenery and the destination itself, the Treviso Hut in Val Canali, you'll pass by Villa Welsperg, which serves as the visitor center for the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park. Sections of the "Muse Fedaie" theme path also run along the route, offering cultural and natural educational elements to your hike.
Also a nice hike, for the children especially thanks to the farm on the way and the cute puppies, but also the dried up river :) But it was very exhausting at the end! Very steep. But our 4-year-old made it too :) Then after the hut we went back to the puppies! A nice hike, but not so easy in the end, very steep. However, our 4-year-old managed it. The farm on the way was great for the kids, especially because of the puppies :)
Excursion starting from Cant del Gal, a walk that for half the route is quite easy without major difficulties, from half the route instead the climb and also the terrain with large roots emerging, made us sweat a little more than the first part. Once we reached the Treviso refuge, it is surrounded by the majesty of the Pale therefore a beautiful panorama ideal for photos. The peculiarity of this trip is the ease of reaching the destination, in fact I also noticed many children joined by their families. After having a bite to eat, I return by the same road except for the last stretch on asphalt.
Too crowded. It is advisable to avoid the week of August
