Hiking

Hike the Monte Guardia trail for an easy journey across Ponza's volcanic landscape, offering extensive panoramic views of the island and its neighbors like Palmarola and Zannone. This 3.0-mile (4.8 km) route takes about 1 hour and 42 minutes to complete, with a manageable 953 feet (290 metres) of elevation gain. You will pass through Mediterranean scrub and along dramatic cliffs, enjoying vistas of the sea and the iconic Faro della Guardia. The path leads to the island's highest point, providing unparalleled scenery.

This easy hike is suitable for most fitness levels, making it a great choice for nearly anyone. While the paths are generally accessible, you should wear sturdy shoes, especially if you plan to explore beyond the main route. An ancient mule track guides you to the summit of Monte Guardia. Be aware that an older path directly to the lighthouse is not always well-maintained and can have rocky, unstable sections, so it is best to avoid it.

Monte Guardia is the highest point on Ponza, offering unique views and a glimpse into the island's past. At the summit, you can find the remains of the 19th-century Semaphore of Monte Guardia, an old optical telegraph, along with traces of a 17th-century tower. The trail also passes near Bagno Vecchio, a white pebble beach where Roman necropolis remains have been found, adding historical depth to your scenic adventure.

View of Faro della Guardia

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Ponza Lighthouse, called "Faro della Guardia" was built in 1886. It is located on Monte della Guardia. It is not recommended to take the ancient path that leads to the lighthouse as it is not accessible. However, it is possible to admire the lighthouse from this vantage point.
