The Goyon Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

This ferruginous spring gushes out in a fountain itself set in a stone enclosure, making the place intriguing, all the more so as the effect is accentuated by the deposit of rust which has tinted the fountain red.

Lake Pavin

Highlight • Lake

Lac Pavin is one of the emblems of Sancy. Its depth reaches almost 100 meters and its circular shape attests to its explosive volcanic origin. With its dark and mysterious waters, it is the subject of many legends.
Due to its volcanic nature and its meromictic character (the surface waters do not mix with the waters of the depths themselves loaded with toxic gas), it has also long been the subject of numerous studies and scientific hypotheses which can sometimes explain the legends.

On this long path, enjoy an almost panoramic view. Behind you, Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise remains. In front, observe in the distance the summit of the Puy de Sancy which dominates all the neighboring volcanoes.

Besse

Highlight • Settlement

Standing south of the historic center, the belfry of Besse is the only memory of the three old fortified gates of Besse.

Adorned with battlements and topped with a clock, the gate dates from the Hundred Years War.

The gate is an essential historic passage on the long-distance hiking trails that criss-cross the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park for the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop trail?

The loop starts from Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise. You can typically find parking within or on the outskirts of the town, which serves as a convenient starting point for the hike. Specific parking areas are usually well-indicated for visitors accessing the trails around Lac Pavin and the Couze river.

Is the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop trail dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails in the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through pastures with livestock or in sensitive natural areas around Lac Pavin, to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.

What is the best time of year to hike the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop?

The trail is enjoyable in spring, summer, and autumn. Spring offers lush greenery and wildflowers, while summer provides warmer weather ideal for enjoying the lake. Autumn brings beautiful fall foliage. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear due to snow and ice, especially on higher sections and around the lake.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to hike in the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne?

No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to access the hiking trails within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, including the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop. However, always respect local regulations and private property signage.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop?

The trail offers varied terrain, including paths alongside the Couze Pavin river with cascades, shaded forest sections (especially beech and spruce), open pastures, and ascents to volcanic viewpoints. Parts around Lake Pavin are relatively flat, but the full loop involves moderate elevation changes and some narrower, more uneven paths requiring sure-footedness.

What notable landmarks or viewpoints will I encounter on the route?

You'll experience several highlights, including the unique Lake Pavin, a perfectly circular crater lake. The trail also passes by The Goyon Spring and offers a Panoramic view of Besse and the valley. The charming medieval town of Besse itself is a highlight at the start and end of your hike.

Is the La Couze and Lac Pavin loop suitable for families with children?

While parts of the trail directly around Lake Pavin are relatively easy and accessible, the full loop is rated as moderate due to its distance (around 12 km) and approximately 300 meters of elevation change. Families with younger children or those less accustomed to hiking might find the full loop challenging. Consider shorter sections or ensure children are fit for a 3-3.5 hour hike with varied terrain.

Does this trail connect with other hiking routes?

Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Notably, it follows sections of the Ballade autour du Pavin (88% coverage) and the Boucle Longue du Sancy (61% coverage). You might also encounter parts of the Tour des volcans et lacs d'Auvergne and Le puy de Montchal et le Lac Pavin.

Are there facilities like restrooms or cafes near the trail?

The starting point in Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise offers various amenities, including cafes, restaurants, and public restrooms. Around Lake Pavin, you may find some facilities, especially during peak season, but it's always wise to carry enough water and snacks for the duration of your hike.

What should I wear or bring for this hike?

Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, wear sturdy hiking shoes. Dress in layers suitable for changing weather conditions, as the Auvergne region can be unpredictable. Bring water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a rain jacket. A map or GPS device is also recommended, though the trail is generally well-marked.

What makes Lac Pavin a unique natural feature?

Lake Pavin is unique because it's France's youngest crater lake, formed approximately 6,900 years ago. It's an almost perfectly circular maar (volcanic crater) and is meromictic, meaning its water layers do not mix. This creates distinct ecological zones and contributes to its mysterious, dark appearance, which can turn turquoise-blue at the edges in summer.

We start our tour today, in thick fog, at lac Pavin. Lac Pavin - between Besse and SuperBesse - is a 44 ha crater lake, located at an altitude of 1197 m on the flank of the Puy de Montchal (1411 m). It is surrounded by beautiful forests and basalt rocks. With a depth of 92 m, it is the deepest lake in Auvergne. From here we climb up to the Puy de Montchal. Normally you have a beautiful view of the landscape here. Unfortunately due to the fog we missed this today. But the trail was definitely worth it. Beautiful nature here. Once at the top, we now continue in a descending line towards Besse. Besse, a medieval and renaissance town that was long a fief of physicians. Here is plenty of opportunity to satisfy the hungry stomachs. The way back to lac Pavin leads us largely along the water "la couze pavin". On the way we come across the source "Goyon" in a hidden spot. The water that bubbles out of this is rich in iron and bicarbonate. We continue our journey in an upward direction towards Lac Pavin. Brave the tree roots and the narrow paths between the meadows. Also from here you normally have a beautiful view of the landscape. Another tour for us that we can highly recommend
