This segment of the Monte Rosa Tour is considered a difficult hike. It requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience due to the significant and steep climb to the pass. It's generally more challenging than the Tour of Mont Blanc.
The trail offers stunning views of the Monte Rosa massif's east face, often called the 'Himalayan Wall'. Key highlights include the charming Walser village of Macugnaga, panoramic views of Macugnaga and Monte Rosa itself. At the pass, you'll find the iconic Golden Madonna Statue at Monte Moro Pass, the Rifugio Oberto Maroli, and Lago Smeraldo, which beautifully reflects Monte Rosa's east wall.
While the trail itself is generally accessible for dogs, the challenging terrain and steep sections mean your dog should be fit and accustomed to alpine hiking. If you plan to use the cable car to shorten the ascent, check with the cable car operator beforehand regarding their specific rules and fees for dogs.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to hike this section of the Monte Rosa Tour. However, if you use the cable car from Macugnaga, there will be a fee for that service.
The best time to hike this trail is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the snow has melted from the higher elevations and the weather is generally more stable. Always check local weather and trail conditions before you go, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
Parking is available in Macugnaga, the starting point of the hike. Look for designated parking areas within the village. Specific parking costs and availability can vary, so it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, or check local information upon arrival.
Yes, you can significantly shorten and ease the ascent to Monte Moro Pass by utilizing the cable car facilities available from Macugnaga. This allows hikers to experience the breathtaking views of the pass without undertaking the full strenuous climb.
Yes, this section is an integral part of the broader Tour of Monte Rosa, a long-distance hiking route that circles the massive Monte Rosa plateau. It also overlaps with sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa E50N and the Monte Rosa tour stage 6, as well as parts of the Strà Granda and the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi).
The terrain varies significantly. It begins with a comfortable mule track through a pine forest from Macugnaga, offering constant views of Monte Rosa. As you ascend, the path follows ancient Walser mule tracks through high-altitude meadows and screes. The final push to Monte Moro Pass involves a rocky trail, with some sections equipped with wooden steps and handrails to aid your climb.
Yes, the Rifugio Oberto Maroli is located at Monte Moro Pass, offering a place to rest and potentially find refreshments. It's a key landmark at the pass itself.
This specific segment from Macugnaga to Monte Moro Pass is a point-to-point hike. It marks the border crossing into Switzerland, and from the pass, the trail continues towards Saas Fee. If you're doing the full Tour of Monte Rosa, it's part of a larger circular route.
Today it's back to a climb only stage. From Macugnaga it's up to the rifugio Oberto. I can't really tell much about this climb as it was misty and cloudy and a thunderstorm was approaching, so i had no time to stop. Only thing i can see that it felt like a brutal climb, but i guess that's the consequence of hiking day in and out. I was lucky to arrive in the hut just before a downpour started. When it cleared out a great view at the Monterosa's peaks (Dufourspitze) was presented from the balcony of the hut. The sleeping hut had it's own livingroom with a couch next to a fireplace. Just another great mountainhut to eat & stay.
