From the Terme di Valdieri m.1385 go up towards the Piano del Valasco and homonymous Refuge m.1763, proceed on the path to the right towards the lower lake of Valscura m.2265 (along the way there is a crossroads, on the left for the direct to the Questa refuge, which you will take on the way back), follow a former military road, after the lower lake of Valscura you reach the Claus lake m.2339 and shortly after the Questa refuge m.2388, with nearby the Portette lake m.2351. On the way back, take a right following the direct direction to the Refuge, then descend to Piano del Valasco and then to the Thermal Baths. The direction of the route makes the ascent easier.

After yesterday's deluge, today we start with a clear blue sky to a real highlight in the Italian Maritime Alps. It's the weekend, holidays are in Italy, so many hikers are making their way from Terme di Valdieri in the direction of Pian del Valasco. From the former royal rifugio of the same name, which wants to dominate the valley head with towers on both sides, significantly fewer people are on the old military paths. The path to the Rifugio Questa is steep but never exposed. After a short rest and a birra alla spina we continue. Lago di Claus enchants with its islands and many rocks that invite you to pause. Shortly thereafter, we are already descending, and we can already see Lago di Valscura from above. From the lake with its dilapidated ruins we go down quickly, before the first tunnel we turn right and thus shorten the descent to Pian del Valasco. PS: at the Rifugio Questa, 3 small huts invite you to spend the night under the starry sky, the roofs are 50% glazed. Certainly a dream to sleep there. Current price for 2 people including dinner and breakfast €150.
Beautiful excursion in the Maritime Alps and overnight stay at the Refuge This
Unfortunately the recording stopped at Claus lake. Resuming on the second part
For this long tour, we started from the Valdieri spa car park (€3.50 for the whole day). The trail is all on a mule track (there are also side deviations and shortcuts). To get to the Valasco refuge, it takes about 1/10 15 from the start. Once you leave the refuge, the trail continues on a very bumpy mule track with various rocks. Until you reach a fork where you go up to the Questa refuge on the left, while if you continue you get to the lower Valscura lake. Beautiful. But honestly, I've seen some much more beautiful ones. And then I didn't like the trail very much. Too bumpy and characterized by too many rocks, you can never get into a rhythm, both for going up and for going down.
Fantastically beautiful round tour through a picturesque high valley. Long but worth every step!!! Detailed blog post: https://hikingthealps.com/piano-del-valasco/
