This is a difficult hike, requiring excellent physical fitness, sure-footedness, and prior alpine experience. It involves a significant elevation gain of approximately 1,500 meters and high altitude, which can make physical exertion more challenging. The terrain includes steep sections, scree, rocky ridges, and some simple scrambling.
The hike to the summit of Aiguille de la Grande Sassière typically takes around 6-7 hours to complete, covering a total distance of 11-12 km.
The trail begins in alpine meadows, with a steep initial climb. As you ascend, the landscape becomes more 'mineral' with sections of scree and rocky ridges. There are simple scrambling sections (rated I) that require sure-footedness. A notable part of the trail runs alongside the edge of the Sassière glacier, and the final 300 meters to the summit involve a very steep shale scree slope.
From the 3,747-meter summit, you'll be rewarded with a phenomenal 360° panorama of the entire Northern Alps. This includes breathtaking views of French, Italian, and Swiss peaks, with distant glimpses of Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso.
The trail typically starts near the Saut Hamlet. Parking availability can vary, so it's advisable to check local conditions or transport options before you go.
The optimal time to hike this trail is during optimal summer conditions. However, even in late summer, snow and ice can be present on steep slopes. Always check weather and trail conditions immediately before your planned hike.
The trail is located within the Grande Sassière Nature Reserve. Regulations regarding dogs in nature reserves can vary, so it's best to check with the local park authorities for specific rules on leashes and access before bringing your dog.
The Aiguille de la Grande Sassière is located within the Grande Sassière Nature Reserve. Generally, there are no entrance fees for hiking in French nature reserves, but specific regulations or permits might apply for certain activities or areas. It's always wise to confirm with the local reserve management before your visit.
Given the difficult rating and high altitude, you should bring appropriate alpine hiking gear. This includes sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing for varying temperatures, sun protection, sufficient water and food, a map and compass or GPS, and a first-aid kit. Depending on conditions, an ice axe and crampons might be necessary if snow and ice are present.
As the trail is located within a nature reserve, you have the opportunity to spot various alpine wildlife. Keep an eye out for chamois, ibex, marmots, and bearded vultures.
Beyond the challenging ascent and the summit itself, you'll pass through the Saut Hamlet at the start. A significant part of the route also takes you Along the Sassière Glacier, offering unique views of this receding natural feature. The ultimate highlight is reaching the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière summit.
A day that will remain in our memories with this fantastic climb (and descent) to the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière which peaks at 3747 m and the fabulous panorama that is offered at the summit. The window is short to be able to do this hike without specific equipment, the climb remaining snowy late in the season and subject to the first snowfalls very early. I had planned this weekend for a long time and for a week I had been scrutinizing the weather, which was with us today! This hike is absolutely fantastic (reserved for trained and sure-footed people, 40% sections), it will remain engraved in our memories, and the altitude reached is the highest possible in France for hiking. Wow what a day!
