This route was planned by komoot.
After a tiring day up Scaffel Pike I edited an existing Komoot route to take us up and around here. A few steep climbs in the the first third of the walk but a great walk because of the long descent. Beautiful views over Wasdale and of some super cool rock formations. Nice to get off the tourist track!
Peak & Lake District Sojourn. Day 40. Seatallan 692m, Wasdale Head, Lake District (Nuttall & 3 Wainwrights). Seatallan 692m, Buckbarrow 423m and Middle Fell 582m. Summary After two days off (a first) I was hoping to do the Mosedale Horseshoe today with fresh legs but the weather forecast wasn’t a good one. A first reserve hike was a short one to do Buckbarrow, Seatallan and Middle Fell before the rain came in. Being just off Wast Water which was only a twenty minute drive away it was easy enough to start at six o’clock in the morning and I was lucky enough to have pretty clear skies with lovely views of the Scafell range, Yewbarrow and Illgill Head ridge before the rain came in at just after nine. There are no navigational difficulties on this hike really. After a 1.5km hike from the start point to the base of Buckbarrow there is a wall running alongside a forest. Simply follow this well defined path all the way to the cairned summit of Buckbarrow. A path then leads North West to the impressive cone type summit of nearby Glade How and then onward and gradually upwards to the trig pointed summit of Seatallan. After this is the down and up section to the beautiful craggy back of Middle Fell where there is another cairned summit and glorious views of the Scafell Group, Yewbarrow and Illgill Head. From here the path continues on a steep decent back down to the start point. Parking: Small off road rough parking big enough for 4-5 cars or vans. Route: Well defined paths throughout the route. Good views and a really nice hike. Route Statistics: 10km with 750m of height gain done in 3 hours.
A lovely wander around the Greendale Round with my parents who are up visiting from Lincolnshire ❤ We started the walk from the off-road parking area just to the east of where Greendale Gill meets the road. We hiked up Middle Fell first, a fairly steady pull up to the cairned summit which offers marvellous views to Scafell Pike across Wast Water. We then looped around to Seatallan, digging deep as we ascended the steep grassy slope to the summit. From there we hiked over boggy ground to Buckbarrow, our third Wainwright of the day. Here the paths are more indistinct so be sure to avoid the crags and avoid the temptation to walk south or east off the summit. Instead head north east to pick up the path which runs down beside Tongues Gills. Once in the valley bottom we followed the path on the west side of Greendale Gill back to the road. Mum said "This area had more of a remote feel than most of the other areas we've hiked as family. The komoot app was really useful as it gave peace of mind that we were on track with the planned route. The highlight for me was topping out on Middle Fell and seeing the view to Scafell Pike as I hope to hike it one day soon." Dad said "After a great walk we drove to Nether Wasdale and enjoyed a pint in The Strands Inn - highly recommended." This is one of the more remote parts of the Lake District so the roads are single track in parts, there are no toilet facilities close by and no tarmac parking.
3 more wainwright’s done… 20 to go! I would of done more today but the 4 hour drive there, slippy boggy paths, freezing winds and 4 hour drive back killed my motivation 😅
