Hiking

The Tour of the 5 Lakes of Valgoglio is a difficult hike through the Bergamo Orobie Mountains, covering 7.7 miles (12.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3244 feet (989 metres). This circular route takes about 6 hours and 5 minutes to complete, leading you through varied terrain including wooded sections and equipped passages that may require cables for grip. You will encounter rock staircases, pass through canyons, and see a series of beautiful lakes like Lago Sucotto and Lago Nero, each with distinct colors.

This hike is considered hard, demanding a very good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. Prior alpine experience is essential, as some portions of the route are technical, difficult, or potentially hazardous. Even in June, you might find patches of snow, especially between Lago Nero and Lago di Aviasco. The initial part of the route is often the most strenuous, covering most of the elevation gain in the first few kilometers, but mountain huts like Capanna Lago Nero Hut can offer support.

What makes this trail notable is its unique blend of pristine natural landscapes and impressive hydroelectric engineering. The route showcases both natural and artificial lakes, formed by dams constructed in the 1920s and 1950s. These dams, some resembling fortresses, create a striking visual contrast against the alpine environment, offering a fascinating insight into how human innovation has integrated with the mountain setting.

Trail Reviews

Paolo
August 13, 2023, Giro dei 5 laghi da Valgoglio

Small stretches with metal safety chains, just to avoid slipping but if there are people who suffer from vertigo a little attention will be needed. The parking lot where you leave your car costs 5 euros during the summer. The ring can be covered both in the direction of the black lake first or leaving the black lake last. The stretch that goes up to the black lake is steeper and with "steps" that I preferred to do uphill.

They call it the tour of the 5 lakes but I counted 7. Parking in Bortolotti in Valgoglio (few free spaces on the side of the road, otherwise large paid parking lot 5 euros). I did the tour clockwise as I was advised and in my opinion the right choice. The upper Campelli lake is too beautiful not to take a regenerating bath, bring your swimsuit!

Since 2024 is a year in which, for health reasons and not only, I have done much less hiking than I would have liked, I am always torn in choosing my destination. On the one hand I want to return to the great classics, that is, those destinations that each of us does at least once a year, while on the other I am attracted by new things or those destinations that have been buried in the drawer of desires for years. This week too, after having looked for a mental solution, I opted for a heartfelt solution and the great classic won, namely the Valgoglio lakes. The positive side is that, this week too I do not need to go into detail, as it is a very well-known destination and about which many people before me have written rivers of words, or rather lakes of words. For those who do not know them, I would just like to point out that although it is nothing particularly difficult, it is still not a destination for everyone. Some parts of the trail are exposed and equipped, even if I repeat nothing impossible. Personally, with snow and especially ice, I recommend it only to truly expert people. Another negative thing is the fact that it is a path that devastates the legs of people going down, because of the steps, natural or not, very high. Of course, quite useless advice for young or well-trained hikers, while very useful for those like me, who have well-oiled joints only going uphill, while going downhill we start to creak like a rusty wheelbarrow.

Wonderful tour in terms of landscape that touches a large number of lakes, mostly artificial or in any case expanded by dam systems. The loop is quite demanding in terms of length and height difference, almost all concentrated in the first part of the route, but without technical difficulties. In the sense proposed, between Lake Cernello and Lake Campelli Basso there is a short stretch equipped with steel cables, immediately after a steep ladder, but the path, although quite exposed just before the ladder, is very wide and well maintained and, in the absence of ice or snow, presents no difficulty unless you suffer terribly from a fear of heights. For the rest it is a wonderful excursion always at a short distance from stretches of water.

Strava elevation gain 1077 What can I say, always a nice ride, with a visit to the Valrossa lakes on the way to Cabianca, a hot day and as always great company

After many years, today I had the opportunity to redo a classic excursion in the Orobie Alps, one of those considered to be the most beautiful in terms of landscape: the tour of the five lakes of Valgoglio. The tour, starting from the town of Valgoglio (Bortolotti parking lot) is partly a ring, passable indiscriminately in both directions and includes a wooded part common to the outward and return journeys that overcome, in about two kilometers, a difference in altitude of about 800 meters. Having reached the first Enel stations and chosen the direction of travel of the ring, I continued along paths of medium difficulty, skirting the five lakes and crossing an intact and pure Alpine landscape. There are two refuges along the route, the Lago Nero hut and the Cernello hut.
