Beggar's Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

The romantic Beggar's Bridge, a beautiful arched structure across the River Esk, has a telling inscription. It suggests that it was built in 1619 by 'TF': Thomas Ferries, the son of a local farmer.

Thomas used to ford the river to meet his young sweetheart, Agnes, the daughter of a wealthy squire. Her father thought Thomas too poor for his daughter and disapproved. Determined to seek his fortune at sea, he set sail from Whitby. Though on the day he departed Glaisdale, the Esk was in spate and he was unable to kiss Agnes goodbye.

When he returned years later as a wealthy man, Thomas married Agnes and built this bridge in tribute to her and so that no future lovers would be separated by the river. Today, the bridge is Grade II-listed.

Whitby Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.

37.1 km

This is a great road to take either into or out of Whitby. From high up you can appreciate the vastness of the North Sea and people watch those promenading along the seafront.

To the east you can see to Whitby and to the north-west across to the cliffs of Sandsend Ness.

Sandsend Beach

Highlight • Beach

Just a short distance from Whitby, Sandsend has a completely different feel and is a place of calm compared to the hustle and bustle of Yorkshire's other resorts south along the coast from here.

There are a couple of cafes, Tides and Sandside Cafe and public toilets a short way south east from the Sandside Cafe on the A174.

Runswick Bay

Highlight • Beach

From high up on the road you get a great view of Runswick Bay. You can drop down Cleveland way to get a closer look the sea and pretty village clinging to the side of the coastline, but the tearooms and bakery are up here so its up to you whether you think the extra metres to climb back out are worth it!

Staithes Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Staithes is a beautiful seaside village, home to Captain James Cook in the 18th century. Captain Cook arrived a 16 year old and apprentice to a grocer and chandler and left a budding adventurer. Hardly surprising given the beauty of the coast here in Yorkshire.

To the north of Staithes is Cowbar Nab, an imposing cliff, home to a seabird colony and great for walking up to get unrivalled views of Staithes.

There are plenty of cafes and pubs, plus a stretch of sandy beach and public toilets at Bank Top Car Park.

View of Roseberry Topping

Highlight • Viewpoint

Roseberry Topping is an easily recognisable hill from its uniquely shaped summit. The Matterhorn of Yorkshire!

If you ever leave your bike at home and head for a walk, the views from the top are wonderful.

Captain Cook was apparently a big fan of Roseberry Topping. He was born in Great Ayton and supposedly loved to walk there as a child.

Potter's Side Lane

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a lovely stretch of road between Kildale and Commondale. There is a short steep descent and ascent either side of Sleddale Beck about half way along but don't let that put you off as the views are well worth it.

View of Sandhill Bank

Highlight • Viewpoint

Climbing east out of Commondale this is short, sharp hard work but with it for the views.

If you're heading west into Commondale, even better, enjoy the free speed and rolling views as you weave down the descent.
