No, this mountain bike route is rated as difficult and requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills. Riders should be prepared for strenuous climbs, technical descents, and potentially needing to push their bike in some sections. The technical difficulty can correspond to STS S3 - S6 on the Single Track Scale.
The route offers a diverse range of terrain. You'll encounter rocky uphill paths, broad and flat sections at the top of Muela de Cortes, and steep descents with loose stones that can be slippery. It features a mix of asphalt, wide dirt tracks, and 'super fun' singletrack sections. Be prepared for potential river crossings, some of which may not have bridges.
You'll experience stunning and varied scenery. Highlights include fantastic perspectives of Cofrentes Castle, breathtaking views of a reservoir and the Júcar River, and interesting locations like the Argás Volcano and Las Pozas del Real. Don't miss natural features such as the Alto del Cinto de la Cabra, La Cañada de Abajo, and La Pileta Viewpoint.
The Cofrentes-Ayora region can experience hot summers. For a challenging ride like this, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) generally offer the most pleasant temperatures and conditions, avoiding the intense heat of summer and potential winter chill or rain.
The route starts and ends in Cofrentes, making it convenient to find parking within the town. You can typically find parking near the foot of Cofrentes Castle, which is a prominent starting point for the trail.
While dogs are generally allowed on many trails in the region, this particular route is a very long and difficult mountain bike ride. Given its length (nearly 70 km) and significant elevation changes, it's not typically recommended for dogs, especially if they are running alongside a bike. If you do bring a dog, ensure they are fit enough, well-behaved, and always kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and for their safety.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the natural areas for mountain biking in El Valle de Ayora-Cofrentes. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning protected areas, and ensure you leave no trace.
Yes, this extensive route overlaps with sections of several other official trails. You will find yourself on parts of El Alto de Alcola, Comunitat Valenciana. Fredes - el Pinós, [CIMA VA06] Muela de Cortes, Los Castillos del Valle, and Los Cañones del Júcar, among others.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, essential gear includes a well-maintained mountain bike suitable for technical terrain, a helmet, appropriate cycling apparel, plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), energy snacks, a repair kit (spare tube, pump, multi-tool), a first-aid kit, and a fully charged phone with the Komoot app for navigation. Sun protection is also crucial.
Yes, Cofrentes is a small town and offers several options for cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. You can find places to refuel and relax before or after your ride, especially in the central areas of the town.
Be prepared for the strong ascent early in the route after following the Cabriel River, which leads to the scenic trails. The descents can be quite steep with loose stones, making them potentially slippery. Also, be mindful of river crossings, as some may require wading through water without bridges. The trail's comprehensive nature means you'll encounter a mix of surfaces, from paved roads to technical singletrack, requiring constant attention.
This is a circular route, meaning it starts and ends in the same location in Cofrentes, forming a complete loop around La Muela de Cortes.
I already had this tour in mind for a few months but the weather was still not ideal. In the end the heavy rains have ceased and spring is already kicking in so there are no more excuses to undertake the hard but beautiful ride through the Cofrentes-Ayora Valley and Muela de Cortes. Starting the tour in the charming town of Jalance to go through part of the Ayora-Cofrentes Valley (border region with the province of Albacete) and start the ascent towards the Alto del Cinto de la Cabra through a couple of very picturesque paved roads with astonishing views. Reaching the summit of Alto del Cinto de la Cabra just over 1000m asl is not an easy task however the views allows for several stops useful to catch the breath and keep going. Once on top, the ride continues over the Cinto de la Cabra over a gravel road until descending to the town of Cortes de Pallas. Just before entering the town, there is a detour to pass through El Corbinet. The intense rains of the last weeks have given life to the waterfalls on the Cortes stream giving a spectacle of sound and amazing views. Finally, the return from Cortes to Jalance takes some sections of the GR-7 path and some other deteriorated hiking trails but with incredible views of the Cortes de Pallas Reservoir. The area has a lot of charm and countless places to visit, where I will undoubtedly return soon before the summer. Below a link with some videos taken in different places along the route so you can better appreciate the charm of this area! https://photos.app.goo.gl/cTb844TcvzYWxhQw5
The Júcar and Cabriel rivers are born in the same geological block of the Montes Universales and each one on its side irrigates meadows, gorges and peasant towns of various regions to join in the Cofrentes reservoirs, where they create one of the most spectacular and beautiful canyons in Valencian landscapes. The mountain bike route runs through the Muela de Alcola and the Muela de Cortes in search of the panoramic geodesic vertex of the Cinto de la Cabra (1,018 m), closing the leg-breaking route along the route of the long-distance path GR-7 in the superb gorge of the Júcar River, watched over by the castle of Chirel and the imposing rocks of Cinto del Castillo and Cinto de Sácaras.
