This Tour lets you discover two wonderful towns: Colle Val d'Elsa, famous for the production of crystal objects, and San Gimignano, the city of towers, also known by the friendly name Manhattan of the Middle Ages.

From the center of Colle Val d'Elsa you set off in a northerly direction, taking the bicycle path that connects Colle val d'Elsa to Poggibonsi. Follow the signs for Strada di Vallebuona and at Bibbiano continue towards Poggibonsi. Turn left towards Pietrafitta, following a scenic dirt road that will take you to San Gimignano.

After visiting the town of towers and going around the walls, it's time to ride your bike in the direction of Castel San Gimignano-Volterra. At the top of the first climb after San Gimignano, we suggest you recover your energy with a visit to San Donato, a picturesque medieval village with a beautiful Romanesque parish church.

At this point continue toward the village of Castel San Gimignano and then in the direction of Colle Val d'Elsa, passing through Campiglia dei Foci.

The starting point, Colle Val d'Elsa, can be reached by train plus bicycle from the station in Poggibonsi, about eight kilometers away.

Colle Val d’Elsa, also known as the "crystal capital", is a picturesque town not far from San Gimignano and Monteriggioni. Its ancient part, called Colle Alta, offers particularly suggestive views. Walking through its alleys it is possible to immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere typical of these places.

Lying along the route of the Via Francigena, the city has been animated by pilgrims and travelers for centuries, who stopped to rest at the foot of its characteristic tower-houses.

San Gimignano Historic Centre

Highlight • Historical Site

One of the most typical and fascinating medieval countries (and Unesco heritage) in Tuscany is San Gimignano; it’s is a village that has remained almost intact since the end of the fourteenth century, when it was called the city of one hundred towers, until today. In fact, its main feature were and are the tower-houses, that is, homes that noble families had built by developing them vertically for both defense and prestige purposes. Of these real little fortresses today only 13 remain.
San Gimignano is one of the most visited places in Tuscany (and not only by foreign tourists or from other regions, but also by the Tuscans themselves), yet unfortunately suffers from a mass hit-and-run tourism, for the busloads of groups who arrive in the town, cross it quickly and then leave again. Therefore it is preferable to visit during the low season and out of the weekends.
As for most villages of Middle Ages (when they were particularly careful to emphasize the light, especially inside religious buildings), the most fascinating moments in which to admire San Gimignano are the sunset, when the stone takes the typical reddish hues, and early morning, when a magical bluish mist envelops the silent town and the surrounding countryside.
You can not leave from San Gimignano without having tasted its Vernaccia wine, pecorino cheese or wild boar meat.

Nice circular tour from the Le Grazie hamlet of Colle Val d'Elsa to San Gimignano and back...the final part of the itinerary is a mistake as the navigator remained on. The actual km is approximately 36.
