This route was planned by komoot.
This route is considered a difficult touring bicycle ride, requiring very good fitness. While it includes cycleways and roads, be prepared for unpaved and challenging sections where you might need to dismount and push your bike, particularly around the 6 km, 7 km, 19 km, and 30 km marks.
The estimated duration for this 48.3 km route is around 3 hours and 33 minutes of pure riding time. However, given its difficult rating and varied terrain, you should plan for a longer overall experience, especially if you stop to enjoy the scenery and points of interest.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll cycle on dedicated cycleways (about 15 km), roads (around 7 km), streets (6 km), paths (5 km), and even some singletracks (nearly 2 km). A significant portion follows the smooth inclinations of a former railway line, passing through tunnels and over bridges, often separated from main roads.
You'll pass by several notable spots. Highlights include the View of Lake Como from Argegno, the charming Osteno Village and Lakeside View, and the serene Lake Piano within its nature reserve. You'll also experience the unique Menaggio–Porlezza Cycle Path Tunnel, the historic Villa Carlotta, and the picturesque Tremezzo. Don't miss the Romanesque church of S. Maria Maddalena in Ossuccio.
The route takes you through the protected Riserva del Lago di Piano, a Special Area of Conservation. You'll see diverse environments like aquatic plants, reed beds, meadows, humid forests, and various trees. It's a vital breeding ground for water birds such as Mallards, Coots, and Gray Herons, making it great for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for wild animals like deer and roe deer, especially in the wooded areas.
The best time to cycle this route is generally during spring and autumn when the weather is milder and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Summer can also be pleasant, but be prepared for potentially warmer temperatures. Always check the local weather forecast before you go.
While specific parking locations aren't detailed, you'll likely find parking options in the towns at either end of the route, such as Argegno (near Lake Como) or Porlezza (near Lake Ceresio). For access to the Riserva del Lago di Piano, look for parking near the visitor's center, Casa della Riserva, which also offers picnic tables and information.
The Riserva del Lago di Piano is a protected natural area. While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially within the reserve, to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Be prepared for sections where you might need to dismount and push your bike, which could be challenging with a dog.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to cycle this route. The Riserva del Lago di Piano is a publicly accessible nature reserve. However, always respect local regulations and signage, especially within protected areas.
Yes, a significant portion of this route utilizes the former railway line between Menaggio and Porlezza, which is now known as the Pista Ciclopedonale Menaggio - Porlezza (covering 27% of the route). You will also encounter sections of the Greenway del Lago di Como (20%) and the Antica Via Regina (19%), among other smaller local paths.
Yes, within the Riserva del Lago di Piano, you'll find the Casa della Riserva, which serves as a visitor's center. It offers picnic tables and an information office. For cafes and other amenities, you'll find options in the villages and towns along the route, such as Osteno, Tremezzo, and Menaggio.
Busy roads. No stops at the magnificent villas, e.g. Villa Carlotta. Via San Fedele Intelvi down to Lake Lugano was OK. Great view of the lake. Unfortunately a thunderstorm was approaching. Then a longer forced break at Lago di Piano. Continue on a beautiful cycle path through a nature reserve. Still in the rain. The cycle path towards Menaggio was closed halfway because of tarring work. So back on the busy main road. After waiting for the weather to improve, we went straight to the car park. Arrived there safely, completely soaked and hypothermic. Also thanks to considerate drivers this time, thank God. With good weather and less traffic, it would certainly be an interesting tour with lots of sights.
Super gravel tour from Camping Colli Fioriti between the 3 lakes with a swimming break in Lenno (Cappella Madre della Divina Provvidenza - Lenno (co)) and a snack break before the ascent in Argegno (The Port Cafè). Ascent is long but moderate. Attention at the end 1km incline with 10%.
