Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The Cabezo de la Fuente Loop Trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions with milder temperatures. During summer, it's best to start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Winter hiking is also an option, though some sections can be more exposed to wind.

Is the Cabezo de la Fuente Loop Trail suitable for families or beginners?

The trail is classified as a moderate hike. While some sections are accessible and suitable for all skill levels, portions leading to the summit can be 'a bit vertical' and more demanding, requiring a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. Families with younger children or beginners should be prepared for these challenging parts.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the route?

You'll encounter varied terrain, including both ascents and descents. The path traverses crop fields, the lower slopes of the mountain with abundant dwarf palms, and an old drovers' road. Some sections, especially those climbing towards the summit, can be steep and rocky, while others are more established trails, including parts that merge with the major GR-92 path.

Are there any notable viewpoints or landmarks along the way?

Absolutely! The trail leads to the top of Cabezo de la Fuente, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the Murcian coast and the Mediterranean Sea. You'll also pass by the picturesque Salinas del Rasall, the village of La Jordana, Las Barracas, Fuente Grande, and historical homesteads like Casa de los Mateos and Casas de la Pedriza.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route incorporates sections of several other trails. You'll find it overlaps with parts of the Vuelta al Cabezo de la Fuente, Transmurciana 05, and the Sendero del Mediterráneo - Murcia.

Is the Cabezo de la Fuente Loop Trail dog-friendly?

The Calblanque Regional Park, where this trail is located, generally allows dogs. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect the local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Please remember to clean up after your pet.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Calblanque Regional Park?

There are typically no entrance fees or permits required for hiking the Cabezo de la Fuente Loop Trail within the Parque Regional de Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas y Peña del Águila. However, it's always a good idea to check the official park regulations before your visit, especially during peak seasons, as access rules can sometimes change.

Where can I park to access the trail?

Specific parking information for the Cabezo de la Fuente Loop Trail is not detailed, but access points to trails within the Calblanque Regional Park often have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check local maps or visitor center information for the most convenient and official parking spots near the trailhead.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the varied terrain and moderate difficulty, we recommend sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water (especially in warmer months as water sources are limited), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and snacks. A map or GPS device is also helpful, though the trail is well-marked with yellow and white PR route indications.

Are there any amenities like cafes or accommodation nearby?

While the trail itself is in a natural park, you can find amenities in nearby towns and villages surrounding the Calblanque Regional Park. These areas typically offer cafes, restaurants, and various accommodation options, from hotels to rural guesthouses. The Las Cobaticas Visitor Centre might also provide information on local services.

What's an insider tip for hiking this route?

For the most rewarding experience, consider hiking the loop counter-clockwise. This approach allows you to tackle the steeper, more vertical sections to the summit of Cabezo de la Fuente earlier in your hike, saving the more gradual descents and coastal views for the latter part of your journey. This also positions you perfectly for spectacular panoramic views as you descend towards the coast.

Fantastic circular walk, just a few kilometers from here. In the middle of the Calblanque Regional Natural Park lies a striking mountain, the Cabezo de la Fuente. The ascent of the mountain went smoothly, but the descent via a different path was difficult, it was steep, sandy and stony. All in all a rewarding walk, with beautiful views of the deserted beaches of the Mediterranean...

Intense nice hike in the beautiful nature reserve Calblanque !! Up to 8.5 km it is actually a walk that can be continued by following the yellow / white marked route to the parking lot. We chose to climb the mountain Cabezo de la Fuente (336 m) via a path that is a bit difficult to find at first - soon you will be on the right path that leads to the top. The climb is less intense than the at times very technical descent! Certainly not for hikers who are not used to this !! Finally the mountain path leads through a beautiful forest to the Cueva de Belones where the car was parked !! A special hike !! GPS 12.63 km with 615 elevation meters !!!
