Spring and fall offer the most pleasant cycling conditions with milder temperatures. Summers can be very hot, and while winter cycling is possible, be prepared for cooler weather. The varied scenery, from woodlands to farmlands, is enjoyable in any season.
The first two miles from downtown Mineral Wells are paved. The remaining 18 miles are primarily finely crushed limestone. Be aware of sections with loose gravel, sand, or washouts, especially after rain. The trail follows a former railroad bed, so grades are generally flat with gentle curves.
Given the varied surface, a hybrid, mountain, or gravel bike with wider tires (at least 38mm, preferably 45mm) is recommended. Road bikes may struggle with the loose gravel and sandy sections.
The main trail is generally considered family-friendly due to its gentle grades. However, some unpaved sections with loose surfaces can be moderately challenging. The connector trail to Lake Mineral Wells State Park has a steep descent and switchbacks, which can be technical for beginners.
You'll cycle through remote farmlands, pastures, and shaded woodlands. Keep an eye out for wildlife like deer, foxes, and various bird species. A prominent feature is the 500-foot signature bridge over US Highway 180, adorned with 104 Lone Stars. You'll also pass by Downtown Mineral Wells, a historical site.
The full loop is approximately 78.6 kilometers (48.8 miles) and typically takes around 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete by touring bicycle, depending on your pace and stops.
Lake Mineral Wells State Park offers additional amenities beyond the trail, including camping, fishing, and boating on the 640-acre lake. It's also home to Penitentiary Hollow, a unique rock-climbing area.
The approximately 0.6-mile connector trail leading to Lake Mineral Wells State Park from the main trailway features a steep grade and switchbacks with crushed rock, sand, and dirt. This section is considered moderate difficulty and requires caution, especially on the descent.
