Embark on a moderate road cycling adventure through the North York Moors National Park with the Westerdale, Danby High & Glaisdale Moors loop. This 26.4-mile (42.5 km) route features varied terrain, including sweeping heather moorland and lush valleys, with significant elevation gain of 2443 feet (744 metres). You can expect steep ascents and descents on minor country roads, offering magnificent views across open moorland and dales, especially when the heather blooms in late summer. The ride typically takes around 2 hours and 19 minutes to complete, requiring good fitness for its challenges. You will experience the dramatic contrast between heather-clad moors and wide, flat, farmed valley bottoms, passing through picturesque villages. The route also traces the area where the River Esk originates in Westerdale.

For your convenience, you can easily access this popular route from The Moors Centre at Danby. This location provides visitor parking, dedicated cycle parking, a café, and a shop, making it an excellent starting point for your ride. Planning your visit for late summer will allow you to witness the dramatic beauty of the moorland when the heather is in full bloom, enhancing the already stunning scenery.

This loop is recognized as one of the most popular road cycling routes around Danby, celebrated for its blend of challenging climbs and rewarding vistas. It showcases the unique landscape of the North York Moors, where traditional dry stone walls crisscross the land and river valleys carve through the dramatic moorland. The route offers a true immersion into the region's natural beauty and is a highlight for any road cyclist exploring the area.

Young Ralph Cross

Highlight • Monument

Young Ralph Cross stands at the meeting point of two moorland roads, high on windswept Danby High Moor. It has become an emblem of the North York Moors National Park and is the centre of various old folk tales.

The 10-foot high (3 m) gritstone cross is of uncertain age, with some historians suggesting 11th-century origins. There was once a letter 'R' carved on its south face, though it is no longer visible today.

Fat Betty Waymarker

Highlight • Viewpoint

Fat Betty is a waymarker and boundary marker on Danby High Moor. It is thought to date from the 12th century and may once have had a wooden cross atop.

A wonderful tradition exists at Fat Betty of leaving a gift of food for any travellers who pass by after you and need a snack to help them on their way. So if you are at risk of bonking and are out of food, this is the place to sort you out.

Millennium Cross, Heygate Bank

Highlight • Religious Site

The Millennium Cross was erected by the residents of Rosedale Abbey to commemorate the year 2000. It adds to the tradition of crosses on the North York Moors

From here you can look down to Rosedale Abbey and across to the infamous climb of Chimney Bank.

Glaisdale Rigg Trig Point

Highlight • Natural Monument

Amazing moorland views from here: Great Fryup Dale to the west, Glaisdale Moor to the east, Egton High Moor to the south, Eskdale to the north, and heathery paradise wherever you look, basically. If you find yourself here in the spring and summer, the purple colours of the moors will amaze you.

Yorkshire Cycle Hub

Highlight • Cycleway

Absolutely worth checking out as this place is quite amazing. There's everything one might need for an ace day (or week) out on the bikes, whether you're into road, gravel, mtb or touring. Really knowledgeable staff with a huge passion for spreading the love of cycling.

There's a cafe, bike shop, hire bikes, bike wash, drying room, camping pods and a modern, really clean bunk house for big groups. Seriously, worth a trip. Also set in a beautiful little valley called Fryup Dale which has such quiet, pretty (tough) roads for cycling.
