This trail is renowned for its unique challenge and stunning landscapes, earning it the nickname 'The Cathedral of Hiking.' Its most distinctive feature is the impressive network of over 6,800 ancient Moorish stone steps, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. Successfully completing this route is often seen as a 'baptism' for true hikers in the Valencian Community.
The terrain is diverse and often strenuous, characterized by continuous zigzagging ascents and descents. You'll navigate natural paths, some paved sections, and a small portion of asphalt. The highlight is undoubtedly the more than 6,800 stone steps, meticulously carved into the rock, especially as the path winds through the spectacular and narrow Barranc de l'Infern (Hell's Ravine).
The route offers numerous breathtaking sights. You'll traverse the dramatic Barranc de l'Infern, encounter the unique Forat de la Juvea, a natural hole in the rock offering memorable vistas. Other highlights include the Barranco del Infierno Riverbed Crossing, the Hell’s Gorge itself, and the historical Juvees d'Alt, which are ruins of old agricultural houses. You'll also enjoy a View of Barranco del Tuerto and pass through farmlands and almond groves.
This is considered a 'difficult' or 'medium-high' difficulty trail. It requires a very good level of physical fitness and sure-footedness due to its steep slopes and significant elevation gain of approximately 800 meters. While physically demanding, it is technically simple, meaning no special climbing equipment is needed.
The recommended seasons for hiking this route are spring or autumn. It is strongly advised to avoid hiking in mid-July due to extreme heat, which can make the already challenging route even more arduous and potentially dangerous.
The trail typically starts and ends in the village of Fleix, one of the small villages that make up Vall de Laguar. Parking is usually available in or near the village, but it's always a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends, as spaces can fill up quickly for this popular route.
While dogs are generally allowed on many trails in the region, the extreme difficulty, long duration, and the presence of numerous stone steps and potentially hot conditions on this specific route make it not recommended for dogs, especially during warmer months. Consider your dog's fitness and paw protection carefully if you choose to bring them.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike The Cathedral of Hiking (Circular PR-CV 147). It is a public trail accessible to all.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, it's crucial to be well-prepared. You should carry ample water, at least 4-5 liters per person, especially during warmer months. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for the uneven terrain and numerous steps. Bring sufficient snacks or a packed lunch, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as conditions can change.
The entire route is considered challenging, but the continuous zigzagging ascents and descents, particularly through the Barranc de l'Infern, require constant attention. The thousands of stone steps, while impressive, can be tiring and require sure-footedness. During the rainy season, some sections might be slippery, and a thirty-meter waterfall can form, adding to the dramatic scenery but also requiring caution.
Yes, the route is officially known as 'La catedral del senderismo' and covers 100% of that specific trail. It also intersects with sections of other local paths, including 'La Vall de Laguar-La Vuelta al Cavall Verd', '[CIMA AT13] La Garga * Orba', '[CIMA AT13] La Garga * Sagra', and various segments of 'Camí de la Juvea' and 'Camí de Cantorres'.
This hike really is one you need to do to believe how beautiful it is- no words or pictures can really portray it. Really enjoyed it 🌿
We did this beautiful tour once before in May and we liked it so much that we definitely wanted to do it again. The Moors really put a lot of effort into the many steps... The hike was great again, even though I found it strenuous today. It was also quite warm and there was little shade. Luckily the spring had water halfway through, so we could refresh ourselves and wet our cooling towels again. In Benimaurell our favorite bar was unfortunately closed, but luckily we found an alternative for our well-earned beer 🍻. It was a great day 😀

Best weather - great tour. Ideal for the winter months
Magnificent hike in 03:30 but not to be done in the rain because of very slippery places nor under the summer sun because of some formidable climbs... Good hike 😎Serge 🧘♂️
Beautiful route. It can be physically demanding because it is a continuous up and down, but both the climbs and the descents are quite easy because the path basically makes continuous zig-zags making the slopes not steep. Otherwise it does not present any difficulties and the landscapes are spectacular.
Expensive route, with steep and steep descents. Pets are not recommended. Bring water, good shoes and be in good condition. Do not do it on hot days!!. Demanding route with ups and downs. Pets are not recommended. Bring water, good shoes and be in good condition. Do not do it on hot days!!
