Coverack Harbour

Highlight • Beach

Coverack is a picturesque village with a harbour and beach offering plenty of choice of refreshment, from cafes, restaurants and a pub.

As Coverack is on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula, the beach is generally very sheltered. Although there are 150 shipwrecks just off the coast due to a section of hidden rocks called the Manacles.

The road here comes close by to Porthoustock beach where you can often find a snack van if your energy levels need topping up.

Cars park at the top of the beach on the pebbles, leaving the sandy bay, exposed at low tide, for sunbathers and sandcastles makers.

At either side of the beach you can see the workings of a quarry. The huge silo at the southern end is of particular note. It was once used to store aggregate from the quarry but is now disused.

Porthallow Cove

Highlight • Beach

Porthallow Cove was once home to a thriving pilchard fishing industry, only a few working boats remain.

It is the mid-point of the South West Coast Path. 517km done, only another 517km to go for all the weary walkers passing by. There is a granite sculpture on the beach marking the milestone.

The beach is a pebbly one and as it is pretty hidden away it is often nice and quiet. There is a pub, the Five Pilchards and public toilets.

St Anthony-in-Meneage is a picturesque hamlet on the water of Gillian Creek. A ride on the road round the peninsula to take it in is well worth it.

The South West Coast Path crosses Gillian Creek here, over stepping stones only accessible at low tide.
