Among the places you will encounter on this pleasant 53-kilometer itinerary suitable for the whole family, we find the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve and its Clodia Island, the seafront of Marina di Grosseto and the ancient fishing village of Castiglione della Pescaia.

From the center of Grosseto, continue towards the Grosseto-Marina cycle path. After 6.5 kilometers, turn right onto Strada delle Strillaie and continue towards Grosseto through the locality of Casotto dei Pescatori. Here there is a restaurant bar, where if you wish you can take a break to recharge your batteries. Then continue entering the agricultural area of Squadre Basse and continue pedaling on a smooth dirt road until you reach a hill that was an island in ancient times: the Clodia Island. Here you can admire the remains of the Benedictine Abbey of San Pancrazio al Fango, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Now you are in the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, a naturalistic oasis of great biodiversity. After crossing the Bruna River, continue on municipal roads to the center of Castiglione della Pescaia.

From Castiglione della Pescaia it returns to Grosseto crossing the Oasis of San Felice to Marina di Grosseto. Once you reach its promenade, you can leave your bike to relax a bit on the beach and, why not, to take a refreshing swim in the sea. Finally, return to Grosseto to the starting point.

The point of arrival and departure can also be easily reached by train. The city is served by the Grosseto station, a railway station of the Tyrrhenian Railway.

Castiglione della Pescaia Castle and medieval village

Highlight • Castle

Castiglione della Pescaia, a town of Etruscan origin set on a hill overlooking the sea, intertwines its history with the events of the Etruscans and the Romans. These have left indelible traces of urban wonders: aqueducts, viaducts and paved streets. The medieval heart of the town is dominated by an imposing castle, built around a tower built by the Pisans in the 10th century. Surrounded by walls that embrace the medieval village, made up of ancient houses and towers, the castle stands as testimony to bygone eras. These walls, erected in the 10th century, are composed of the remains of two distinct fortification systems. The initial ring dates back to the 10th-13th century, when Pisa protected the town, while the second wall was built in the 15th century to defend the settlement on the hill. In addition to the castle and the medieval village, the landscape of Castiglione della Pescaia is enriched by the presence of the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, recognized internationally for its rare ecosystem. In 1404, Castiglione della Pescaia came under the protection of Florence, with the Medici undertaking extensive land reclamation efforts to repopulate the area. However, the most significant efforts were made in the decade between 1828 and 1838 under Leopold II, known as Canapone. Today, Castiglione della Pescaia is a renowned seaside destination, famous for its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. The country offers countless opportunities for those passionate about nature, history and culture, making it an ideal retreat for holidaymakers.

The splendid cycle path between Castiglione della Pescaia and Marina di Grosseto on safe and signposted asphalt is excellent for a trip in the area, a connection between the cities or for warming up before climbing the Castiglione climb or before entering the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve.
