Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to hike the Ring tour to Cornizzolo and Monte Rai?

The ideal time to undertake this hike is during the spring and autumn months. These seasons offer pleasant temperatures and clearer skies, which are perfect for enjoying the spectacular panoramic views. While summer is also possible, be prepared for warmer weather, especially on exposed sections. Winter hiking is generally not recommended due to potentially challenging conditions like ice and snow on the steep, rocky paths.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail features highly varied terrain. You'll encounter relatively accessible cobblestone paths in the initial sections, transitioning to steep, often rocky, and sometimes slippery ascents and descents. The route winds through dense forests of hazel, hornbeam, maple, and ash, then opens up into meadows, and finally reaches rocky areas and panoramic ridge crests near the summits. Some descents, particularly from Corno Birone, are noted as very steep and stony, requiring careful footing.

Where can I park to access the Ring tour to Cornizzolo and Monte Rai?

Hikers often start this ring tour from areas like Gajum in Canzo, where you can find parking. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking can be limited. Public transport options to nearby towns are also available, from which you can connect to the trailheads.

Are there any notable landmarks or viewpoints along the route?

Absolutely, the route is rich with points of interest and offers exceptional views. You can visit the historic San Pietro al Monte Abbey. The main highlights for views are the Summit cross of Monte Cornizzolo and Mount Rai, both providing spectacular 360-degree panoramas of Lake Como, Lake Pusiano, Lake Annone, Lake Garlate, and on clear days, distant Alpine peaks like Monte Rosa and Resegone.

Is this trail suitable for dogs?

While there are no explicit restrictions mentioned, given the trail's 'difficult' rating, steep rocky sections, and potential for slippery terrain, it is generally not recommended for all dogs. If you do bring a dog, ensure it is fit, accustomed to challenging hikes, and kept on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers. Always carry enough water for both yourself and your pet.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this hike?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Ring tour to Cornizzolo and Monte Rai. The trails are publicly accessible.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that overlap with paths such as Sentiero 10: Civate - Rifugio Consiglieri, Anello dei Tre Casott, Sentiero Geologico Alto, and Corno Birone - Monte Rai, among others. This offers opportunities to explore variations or connect to different areas if desired.

What level of fitness is required for this hike?

This trail is rated as difficult and requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. Hikers should be well-trained and prepared for significant elevation changes and demanding terrain. It is not recommended for beginners or those unaccustomed to strenuous mountain hikes.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the challenging nature of the trail, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, plenty of water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather conditions. Trekking poles can be very helpful for stability on the steep and rocky sections, especially during descents.

Is there an insider tip for hiking this route?

For the most rewarding experience, consider starting your hike early in the morning. This allows you to tackle the challenging ascents before the midday heat, secure better parking, and enjoy the panoramic views from the summits in clearer conditions, often before any afternoon haze sets in. It also gives you ample time to explore the San Pietro al Monte Abbey without feeling rushed.

Trail Reviews

Nicola G
November 10, 2024, Lecco : anello da Civate con S. Pietro al Monte e Monti Cornizzolo e Rai

Beautiful route with beautiful views of the Brianza lakes. The Monastery of San Pietro al Monte is worth a stop and visit. The descent from Monte Rai is quite bumpy and is challenging for knees and ankles. The time indicated is not reliable due to problems with recording with the GPS.

Very nice and non-trivial excursion. Some EE and very fast sections. Beautiful panorama on Birone and Cornizzolo. The abbey of San Pietro al Monte is worth the guided tour offered by volunteers on Saturday and Sunday or on request.

done on 21 Aug 24 I started the route in the afternoon around 2:30 pm with the temperature 30 degrees on the way up and all in the shade so doable even in the heat, the summit is all exposed to the sun but in the afternoon you can barely feel it, the descent is also mostly shaded but challenging I suffered a lot :) but with attention you can do everything. It took me more or less 5 hours with the necessary stops. Stunning views teekking suitable as a sport 2000 calories burned. thanks to whoever posted it 💪

Beautiful views from the peaks, and the spectacular San Pietro al Monte Abbey, the climb to the Marisa Consigliere refuge is in the woods, steep but doable, with many steps, the descent from Monte Rai is very steep (even 50% gradient) on a path that is almost always open and slightly exposed, with very slippery scree, not very easy. Overall a nice tour, worth it, even if very busy

the descent of this excursion was quite unpleasant and tiring. all of stones, even some large ones, risk of slipping, but above all super stressed knees. It is a continuous descent without pauses. Anyway, definitely a nice excursion

Translated by Google

Excellent excursion even in winter due to the low altitude (max 1200 m above sea level). Tourist difficulty up to the San Pietro Monastery and then Hiking. No exposed sections. Refuge between Mount Cornizzolo and Rai, open only a few days. Spectacular view from Mount Rai, on the Grigne, the Resegone and the lakes.
