This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is considered difficult, requiring a good level of physical fitness. The route is approximately 16.4 km long with an elevation gain of around 700m. Be prepared for some scrambling, especially in the last 150 meters to the summit, which requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear.
The northern orientation of the ascent means it often provides shade until midday, making it a good option during warmer months. However, spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. Always check the weather forecast for the Benicadell mountain before you go.
The circular route typically starts from the village of Beniatjar. You should be able to find parking within the village itself, near the trailhead. Specific parking areas are usually well-marked for hikers.
The trail offers impressive views throughout. Key highlights include the View of Alt de Benicadell, the historic Benicadell Ice House, and the rewarding Benicadell Summit, which provides panoramic vistas extending to the Alicante coastline and even Ibiza on clear days. You'll also pass through charming agricultural landscapes and forests.
While many trails in the region are dog-friendly, the challenging nature of this particular route, including sections requiring scrambling, might be difficult for some dogs. If you bring your dog, ensure they are fit enough for the terrain and always keep them on a leash, especially in protected areas and near wildlife.
The Sierra del Benicadell is a Protected Landscape, but typically, no specific permits or entrance fees are required for hiking on established trails like this one. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
The terrain is varied. You'll start on tracks from Beniatjar, transition to zigzagging forest paths on the north face, and encounter wider tracks and single-track trails. Near the summit, the terrain becomes rockier, requiring some hand use and minor scrambling along the ridge. You'll also pass through agricultural areas with olive groves.
This circular hike is estimated to take over 6 hours to complete, given its distance of approximately 16.4 km and significant elevation gain. This duration does not include extended stops for breaks or enjoying the views.
Yes, you'll find a pleasant area called Les Fontetes, which has tables, benches, and a fountain, making it an ideal spot for a rest. The Casa Forestal de Les Planisses is another forest house along the route that could serve as a point of interest or a potential alternative starting point for a shorter hike.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other official trails. You will find yourself on parts of the Camino del Alba, El Camí IT5TR5 El Camí del Sud: de Dénia a Castelló de la Plana, Pista Forestal de l'Ombria de Benicadell, Camí de la Serra, l'Escaló, and PRV 213.4.
Given its 'difficult' grading, length, elevation gain, and sections requiring scrambling, this trail is generally not recommended for young children or families seeking an easy outing. It's best suited for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness.
We started the route there because we left the car on that small esplanade, but you can continue a little further (as the route indicates) with the car to the guard's house and start it from there.
