The terrain is exceptionally rugged and demanding. The initial ascent of Breakneck Ridge involves significant rock scrambling over steep ledges. After the initial climb, the trail continues along the ridge with more gentle climbs and descents. The descent from Sugarloaf Mountain can also be very steep with some downward scrambling over loose rocks and dirt. You'll also pass through forests of oak, hickory, sugar maple, and beech trees.
You'll be treated to outstanding and expanding views throughout the hike. Key scenic highlights include breathtaking panoramas of the Hudson River and the broader Hudson Valley. From various vantage points, you can see Storm King Mountain, the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, and Bannerman's Island with its castle ruins. Sugarloaf Mountain itself offers excellent views up and down the Hudson River, and the dramatic cliffs of Breakneck Ridge add to the striking landscape.
The loop offers several spectacular viewpoints. You'll encounter the Sugarloaf Mountain Viewpoint, various Ridge views, a stunning View of the Hudson River from Breakneck Ridge, and the Breakneck Ridge Lookout (View of Hudson River and Storm King Mountain).
