Hiking

On this almost five-kilometer walk, you walk in the footsteps of the Battle of the Bulge. It is hard to imagine that the forest, which is so idyllic today, was the scene of a terrible war offensive in the winter of 1944/1945. But you can still discover evidence of this today: The tour leads you to the so-called "Foxholes". American soldiers dug these holes and trenches to seek shelter from enemy fire.

The short hike starts at the Bois Jacques car park in Foy. You follow the yellow rectangle and hike a bit through the historic forest at the beginning. Later you will pass two memorials commemorating the fallen soldiers. The "Foxholes" are located next to the starting point, so you can check them out at the beginning or end of the round.

A walk that definitely leaves an impression, right?

In the wood behind this monument, on 18 December 1944 "E" Company of the 506th P.I.R. 101st Airborne division U.S. army dug their foxholes in the Bois Jacques Woods as part of the defence perimeter of Bastogne City that was soon to be surrounded by several enemy divisions.
The circumstances were dreadful with constant mortar, rocket and artillery fire, snow fall, temperatures below -28 Celsius at night with little food and ammunition. This monument is dedicated to all that fought and is symbolic of what happened to other units during the Battle of the Bulge.
