Hiking

The May Festival has been organized since 2001 by the non-profit association Vagabond'art, which is also responsible for some of the works of art created in the region. The Sentiers d'Art itself was also inspired by the May Festival, which is why these celebrations have always had a major influence on the culture of the Condroz-Famenne region. Last but not least, there are a multitude of treasures to discover around Gesves - both natural and cultural. On this hike, you will follow in the footsteps of the 2018 May Festival and discover various works of art that you will remember for a long time.

You start in the center of Gesves. There are both parking spaces and a bus stop here. First, you head west into the Samson Valley. This part of the hike is characterized by water and forest. You follow the stream for a good distance and shortly after a beautiful picnic area you come across an installation that is as simple as it is ingenious: the trees have been turned upside down by the Dutch-Belgian artist duo Michiel Verstraten and Shirin Azad. This makes them look almost as if they were setting off on a hike themselves. At the edge of the forest, you now go around Gesves until you reach the local castle on a final short loop.

Sentiers d'Art - Triskele

Highlight • Structure

Triskele (a triangular shape) is a very old symbol. It can mean life-death-rebirth, past-present-future, earth-water-heaven, etc. It is connected to time, movement and changes. Triskele is a spiritual space where you can rest, reflect on life and time, watch and listen to nature.
This artwork was installed and funded by Vagabond'art ASBL as part of the Fête de Mai. This work is in boucle Fête de Mai 2019

The natural shape of the trees in combination with the mathematical shape of the square raises some interesting questions.

Sentiers d'Art - Mai trop Gesves

Highlight • Monument

In the past, the tram line between Courrière and Ohey ran here. This inspired the Belgian artist Jérôme La Grange to create this special work of art.

Sentiers d'Art - The Mobile Tree

Highlight • Monument

A wooden vehicle in the middle of the forest. Or is it a tree on wheels? This work of art by Arno Arts from the Netherlands allows for many interpretations.

Gesves Castle

Highlight • Castle

Gesves castle

Developed from a medieval keep, the Château de Gesves was considerably remodeled during the 19th century and retains only part of the original shell. A fenced set of walls and square corner towers partially bathed by the Samson, this castle includes a massive three-storey keep and next to it, a round tower from the 17th century. The house is traditional L-shaped, also from the 17th century, with a square turret in the center.
