Hiking

Species-rich mixed forests, rugged rocks and thundering waterfalls characterize the varied landscape on this tour through the national park.
The starting point is the National Park House Ilsetal, where the rangers give tips for the hike. The first few kilometers lead along the Heinrich-Heine-Weg through the wild and romantic Ilsetal. Other highlights include the roaring Ilse falls and the Plessenburg forest inn, which invites you to take a little break. The highlight of the tour is reaching the Ilsestein with its fantastic view of both the Harz Mountains and the Harz foothills.

Find out about the beech forests around Ilsenburg.
Our national park house is located in the Ilsetal - diagonally opposite the large car park on the southern outskirts of the national park community of Ilsenburg. After a visit, you are well prepared for your forays through the national park forests around Ilsenburg and the wildly romantic Ilsetal. There is also a lot to discover in the garden of the National Park House.

Walking along the watercourse and listening to the rippling water is really romantic. In summer, it's worth taking a short break to put your feet in the water.

Upper Ilse Falls

Highlight • Waterfall

The Ilse Falls plunge leisurely over a distance of one kilometer about 120 meters into the beautiful Ilsetal. The roaring Ilse can be heard from afar. The picturesque river has already inspired Heinrich Heine, who actually writes everything about it in his Harzreise:

"It is indescribable how cheerfully, naively and gracefully the Ilse tumbles down over the adventurously formed pieces of rock, so that the water hisses wildly up here and then scuttles over the small stones again like a lively girl. Yes, Ilse is a princess who runs down the mountain laughing and blooming.”

Our shelters in the Harz National Park are usually located in places worth seeing and are therefore popular hiking destinations. They serve as a short-term rest and break option and as protection in the event of bad weather. Overnight stays are only permitted in an emergency. In the interest of everyone, whether human or animal, our shelters must be kept clean.

Plessenburg Inn (HWN 7)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Fantastic hike through the Ilsetal in the footsteps of Heinrich Heine. The food at the Waldgasthof Plessenburg was delicious and filling (plessenburg.de/). In a small but fine hut, we were lovingly cared for by a young landlady with cocoa and coffee. In the National Park House Ilsetal we were then surprised by a climbing wild cat.

Incidentally, the Bavarian Wolpertinger is called “Rasselbock” in the Harz Mountains.

The vantage point in the Ilsetal!
Stamp point of the Harzer hiking pin and on weekends there is also a summit beer.

Hello everyone! Today we started from a paid parking lot (as of 5/2023 day ticket 6 €) in Ilseburg. The great hiking trail runs directly along the Ilse. This is awesome! Up to the Ilse Falls. Then the path branches off towards the cliffs (which are also worth seeing!). Views, lots of water, varied vegetation, cliffs, (lots of hikers) and …

A very nice tour that has many great views, even if the way is sometimes difficult. Good surefootedness is an advantage. There is a parallel track on a paved path.

Beautiful round of Ilsenburg over the Ilse Falls and the Plessenburg back to Ilsenburg.
The Heinrich-Heine-Weg partly has an alpine character and the lovely Ilse murmurs below.

Today, yes exactly today and with this hot weather I'll take you on an Ilsetal hike 💪. It was quite pleasant under the shady deciduous trees in the Ilse valley, you could cool off your feet really well at the Ilse falls, linger there and admire Heinrich Heine's poetic accompaniments again and again along the way, an absolute highlight.
