Mannheim has been my place of work since 1980. During that time, I didn't even manage to hike through Mannheim's jungle (Reißinsel). I've now changed that and invited friends. We hiked through Reißinsel from south to north and further east back again. The paths were difficult in places because they were slippery and, fortunately, frozen. As a stop was planned, everyone was careful and no one wanted to "sit down". It worked. The warming sun was definitely an important motivational boost to go out that day. On the small western section, you can walk parallel to a pebble beach right on the Rhine. From there you can see the LU side and the water level clock. A crime scene with Folkerts and Kopper was filmed there in 2016: https://www.ludwigshafen24.de/ludwigshafen/ludwigshafen-swr-tatort-dreh-zu-sprechende-tote-mit-ulrike-folkerts-und-andreas-hoppe-6943513.html From March 1st to the end of June the island is closed every year due to bird breeding. A great idea from Carl Reiß to open this island to the people of Mannheim after the clay mining. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rei%C3%9Finsel I can recommend stopping off at Café Meerwiesen, which is located in the Lindenhof district, northwest of Reiß Island. Easy to reach for cyclists. If you are driving, park in the area or at Meeräckerplatz.
Bad weather... what to do? Why not walk across the Mannheim Reissinsel nearby? This is a nature reserve right on the Rhine. The circular route led us from the parking lot through the forest park to the entrance of the rice island. First on paved paths.. then it got a bit muddy. However, there was something to discover everywhere. It was nice along the Rhine and along the old arms of the Rhine..... and at the meadow orchards...actually everywhere, despite the weather
Monday and the sun 🌞 laughs. Get out there and cross the rice island again, which is closed from March to the end of June. The mixture of extensive meadow orchards, winding paths and a pebble beach make this island a pure oasis. In the area of the meadow orchards there are a few benches and invite you to rest and read. My highlight is always walking along the pebble beach and listening to the 🌊 😊💙. Quite inconspicuously, a deadwood trunk on the pebble beach invited me to take a break. Perfect for consuming 🍏 and enjoying a little pure 🌞. As usual, there was a lot going on on the Rhine 🚢. Before I said goodbye to the rice island, I treated myself to a water break at the rest bench in front of the exit. The rest of the way to the beach was lively and stress-free. Despite the good weather, there were fewer athletes and cyclists on the road. "Here the tree should grow old and fall without human hands falling it" Carl Reiss, Banker & Consul General The Reißinsel, a gift from Carl Reiß to the citizens of Mannheim and thus the preservation of a special oasis for animals and plants. ⛔️ Rest time for nature From March 1st to the end of June. Free again from July 1st. ℹ️ Carl Reiss https://rlp.museum-digital.de/object/82588 ℹ️ Carl Reiß & Reißinsel https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rei%C3%9Finsel
If you want to visit the nature reserve, you should note that this is only possible from July 1st to February 28th. During the breeding season from March 1st to June 30th, the entrance and exit opposite Cuckoo Island is closed. https://www.mannheim.de/de/service-bieten/umwelt/naturschutz/naturschutze/reissinsel https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rei%C3%9Finsel
A short flatland tour on the Mannheim Reißinsel was on the agenda today. Lots of nature along the Rhine with some bird sounds.
I always wanted to go there and Steff showed me. I only started the recording on the island. Wonderful, sometimes somewhat mystical forest... great and the industry of Ludwigshafen right across the Rhine. Contrast. The altitude indication is standard Komoot bullshit... it's flat as pancakes!
