Water rats and bats Tour – nature adventures in Spandau

Cycling

The south of the Spandau district is a great place to cycle. This 33-kilometer tour is proof of this, with lots of water, lots of greenery and an exciting fortress. So, bring some time with you and enjoy this varied tour just outside Berlin.

You start in the old town of Spandau or - if you come by S-Bahn - directly at the train station. From here you roll through the south of Spandau and head for the Havel, whose banks you reach at the Scharfen Lanke. From the bay you have a great view of the water and with a bit of luck an impressive yacht or a majestic sailing boat will sail past. In any case, it is a nice place to linger for a moment.

Now you follow the Havel for quite a while and the cycle path of the same name, which runs idyllically along the banks of the river. You pass through cozy villages and the whole time you have a great view of the Grunewald on the opposite bank. Shortly before the route leaves the river, you reach a small, idyllic bathing area where you can sit down for a break or even jump into the water.

Shortly afterwards, you reach the Groß Glienicker See and then cycle back towards Spandau on the Wall Cycle Path. Before you reach the old town, however, the tour makes a small detour. The old fortress Fort Hahneberg is really worth seeing. It was located directly on the border strip between the Federal Republic and the GDR and was left to itself for decades. It has only been restored and can be visited since the 1990s. During a visit, you will learn a lot about the interesting (border) history of the area - and with a bit of luck, you might even see one of the bats that live here. The little animals also feel very comfortable here!

Idyllic park with boats on the bank and a wide view over the Havel (“Scharfe Lanke”) to the Grunewald Tower.

Nice little bathing spot. Usually not too busy. The view of Lindwerder, Lieper Bucht and Grunewald is of course a pleasure if you spend some time here. Far away from the road, it is wonderfully quiet here.

Groß Glienicker Lake

Highlight • Lake

When you see the crystal clear water of the lake, you can hardly help but stop and jump in to cool off. The Groß Glienicker See is a very beautiful bathing lake with two official bathing areas. It is definitely worth taking a break here.

Cycle Path from Groß Glienicke to Spandau

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The bike path seems to be quite new and is doing really well. He leads here and there a bit off the road through the forest and along fields. The asphalt is still really good and provides little rolling resistance, so you're pretty fast and with little effort on the way.

Fort Hahneberg

Highlight • Historical Site

Fort Hahnenberg was the last fortress construction in Germany. In 1888 the massive brick fortress was completed. To make the fort particularly stable, the old Hahneberg was partially removed and excavated and the fortress in the pit 'sunk'. Today you can visit the fort on weekends and public holidays as part of a guided tour.

Bullengraben Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Bullengraben is one of Berlin's 20 "green main paths." These paths run through the city's green corridors and beautifully connect neighboring neighborhoods. At seven kilometers long, the Bullengraben is the shortest path. It runs only in the Spandau district, from the Berlin state border near Seeburg to the banks of the Havel River south of Spandau's old town. The Bullengraben itself was used as a cultivated moat as early as the 7th century and served as a drainage ditch for the Spandau district from the 1960s onwards. Today, the area has been completely reclaimed and serves as an idyllic landscape park. The artist Sebastian Kulisch created a steel sculpture as a symbol. The "Bullengraben Bull" was unveiled at the opening of the recreation area.
