Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Since the summer of 2020, the entire railway cycle path (former railway line) from Ennigerloh to Freckenhorst has been resurfaced. It was about time, the way was cruel, at this point my thanks to those responsible.

Vornholz Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Vornholz Castle was built around 1300 and served the knights of Ostenfelde as their seat. After the destruction of the moated castle during the Thirty Years' War, the present-day Vornholz Castle was built on the old foundations in 1666.

The old post road Oelde - Warendorf passed here and there is the junction to Beelen, Westkirchen and Ostenfelde. The chapel association of the Schürenbrink chapel replaced the first weathered and destroyed cross in 2005 with a new wooden cross.

I was expecting a bit more from the title "Small Castle Tour", but Vornholz Castle is definitely worth seeing. The section of road just before junction 22 (you drive into a small forest) is only conditionally suitable for insecure drivers and bikes with trailers: narrow path, partly with roots and a

June 16, 2023, Kleine Schlössertour – Touren rund um Warendorf

Hello cyclists! The round in the direction of Beelen is very easy to drive, farm roads and paved bike paths away from the main roads. The way back is a bit lengthy, not particularly exciting.

Beautiful tour of the district of Warendorf. The route is easy to drive with a very nice view. Many opportunities to rest, be it on benches or in restaurants. A highlight is the old town of Warendorf. The buildings look really great. Those arriving by car can park in a small car park at the starting point.

Today we parked at the cemetery in Ostenfelde. After a short while, we were able to admire the 🏰 Vornholz golf course. A wonderfully well-maintained facility, idyllically situated. Quiet paths led us past beautiful farms. Asparagus, potatoes, cattle, pigs, some even had a small farm sale. The ice cream 🍦 in Warendorf was also a must. The maypole stood in the market square. A lovely walk in the 🌞shine and almost summery temperatures. There were plenty of benches to sit on, and we used them.

This round trip also comes from the website of the town of Warendorf and is called the "Small Castle Tour". Well, we only saw one castle, but it was still a nice trip. The routes were very different: cycle paths, farm roads, so-called single trails, small country roads with little car traffic, but also cycle paths on the side of a federal highway. But everything was mostly pleasant and safe to ride. Here are the junctions from Markt Warendorf: 1-77-81-54-33-21-66-67-83-92-20-57-1 Unfortunately, there were no obvious places to stop for refreshments along the entire route (except Warendorf) today (Thursday).

The start is from the historic market square in Warendorf. The city is a “horse metropolis 🐎”. It first goes south to Freckenhorst/Ennigerloh and then to Westkirchen. From here I drive on a disused railway line towards Ostenfelde. This varied route leads through the Liebetal and past Vornholz Castle 🏰. The moated castle with a baroque entrance portal has been the seat of the Knights of Ostenfelde since the 12th century. Today the castle is privately owned. On the way to Beelen I pass a golf course 🏌️, farms 🚜🐮 and riding facilities 🐎 (horse region). After crossing the B64, I drive over the idyllic Axtbach. Then I cross the Ems and continue cycling on the Warendorfer Landweg. I wanted to cross the bridge at the beer garden 🍺 "Herrlichkeit" to the other side of the Ems, but unfortunately this section was closed. So I stay on this side until the next bridge in Warendorf.

A lovely little circular tour on quiet paths. There are also quite a few geocaches to find along the way, including some very interesting Adventure Lab caches. It's definitely worth a try.
