Hiking

This route winds through beautiful, species-rich nature reserves. Ghent is just a stone’s throw away, but here, there are no signs of the hustle and bustle of the big city.

As you hike, keep your eyes and ears open as the unique mixture of wet and dry meadows create a fascinating mix of fauna against the backdrop of wonderful flora here.

And here’s a recommendation for you to end your hike in style: reward yourself with a stop at the Nenuphar Restaurant. An established name in gastronomy, this Ghent restaurant has been a destination for local families since the 19th century. It’s a chance to enjoy authentic Flemish cuisine using seasonal and regional ingredients and, when the weather is fine, offers a sensational view of the River Leie from the terrace: https://www.restaurant-nenuphar.com

Afsnee

Highlight • Settlement

Afsnee is a picturesque village on the banks of the Leie River. Hard to believe: Afsnee is part of Ghent, but not a trace of a big city. The oldest documented mention of the place dates back to the year 697, when the Abbey of St. Peter in Ghent opened a branch here under the name "Afsnis". The name probably refers to the shortening ("afsnijde") of the old Leie curve, the mouth of which is north of the church.

Since then, water has determined life and so the village center is located directly on the river, as are other settlements. You will still find an original, open cultural landscape and some older farms here.

Beelaertmeersen

Highlight • Natural

In the Beelaertmeersen nature reserve, the Leie has created natural floodplains in several places. While lower-lying areas are swampy, higher-lying areas remain dry. As a result, the fauna and flora are diverse and you will find lush vegetation with sedge, marigold and cuckoo flower, cave reed, buttercup and mouse tail. The ditches are full of water violet, dull pondweed, and syringa.
In the evenings you can hear owls in the old pollarded willows at the field edges. Rare birds such as bluethroats, warblers, reed buntings and kingfishers breed here. There is also something going on in winter: then you can discover many snipes, but also little snipes and water pipits.

Keuzemeersen

Highlight • Natural

Another nature reserve in the shadow of civilization: in the distance you can hear the traffic on the E40, to the left you can see the villas on the banks of the Leie in Sint-Martens-Latem. But you will quickly forget all this given the magic of this nature reserve.

It consists of wet grassland that is regularly flooded. Note the many pollarded willows that have long since disappeared from other lakes around Ghent. If you are quiet you can spot shovelers, yellow wagtails, reed buntings and several lapwings.

We didn't enjoy the walk very much. You can hear the noise of the highway all along the route.

Two walking loops, with the Goedinge Bridge as a junction, connect the picturesque village of Afsnee and the Beelaertmeersen with the Keuzemeersen nature reserve.

You start in Afsnee, a picturesque village on the banks of the Leie River. Although Afsnee is a submunicipality of Ghent, there is hardly any urbanization here. The picturesque village center is a protected townscape.

A nice walk, with many unpaved areas, and beautiful villas on the waterfront.

Nice walking tour starting from the picturesque village of Afsnee along the Leie. Unfortunately, I had some problems with the GPS, which meant that the route (and number of km) was not indicated correctly...
