An overnight stay near the Hohe Geba made it possible to use Sunday for another hike. The views were spectacular, even if it might be even more beautiful at other times of the year. Even without a map, orientation was no problem. Make sure you pack enough provisions. Really beautiful!
Beautiful hike around the "Hohe Geba". A hill of 751m above sea level in the Rhön, about 5km from the former German/German border. You pass through the towns of Stepfertshausen, Oberkatz and Geba. There are 4 touring stamps on the tour. As a special treat, you can get stamp 245 on the way at the "Rhönfrieden". In the tour booklet, this is part of the "Dr. Malade Trail". Just like the 240 on the Hohe Geba. This means that you have already ticked off half of the "Dr. Malade Trail" on the "Geba Trail". The very good signage of the hiking circuit is worth mentioning. The photos of the tour were once again pretty mixed up. I have assigned them to the parts of the route to the best of my knowledge and belief.
Today, Petra from the Steigerwald Club invited us to a Rhön hike, the "Extratour Gebaweg," and several hiking friends joined us. Following the original route, but starting in Stepfershausen, it was a relaxed day of hiking with very pleasant temperatures and sunshine, so we had lots of fun along the way and enjoyed some great views. Various viewpoints, traditional village ensembles, the Evangelical Lutheran village church of Geba, the Geba Plateau, a former Soviet Army base (for 30 years)... Overall, lots of beautiful pictures, nature, and history. Simply great for hiking ❤️...
Started in Oberkatz, counterclockwise towards Hohe Geba. Right at the beginning we met Peter from Switzerland. He moves from Bern to Berlin. Our paths diverged and brought us back together again. It was funny that Peter showed up just as the food was on the table. We fortified ourselves with a magnificent view. Unfortunately, the restaurants on the Hohe Geba were closed. On the further way, thanks to a tip from a nice couple, we also found the Teufelskanzel stamping point. It's off the path. Continue in pleasant temperatures through the forest to Oberkatz. Nice tour, with great views.
A spring day like in a picture book and a dreamlike incomparable hike in the Rhön. What more does a person need to be happy! The "Hohe Geba" is a very special place with a wonderful panoramic view over the Rhön up to the Rennsteig and the Fichtelgebirge. A mountain that radiates power and captivates people. After the hike, the Bergstübchen invites you to coffee, home-baked cakes and bratwurst. Historically, the mountain has a lot to show for itself. The Geba was from 1961 - April 1991 the westernmost base of the Soviet Army and the counterpart of the western Wasserkuppe. Detailed description ▶️(Wikipedia)
Rhön hike uphill and downhill with panoramic views - contentment in the heart
Man, what kind of soup is that on the high Geba when we start! Visibility below 10 m and temperatures below 5°C. 🥶 The start runs past the Gebaer Rhöngarten and past the Bergstübchen. First it goes downhill through the forest. And while we're talking, we suddenly realize that the path markings that are otherwise used almost inflationary are missing in some places! No problem thanks to the GPX track on the Suunto, but without it we wouldn't want to wander through the fog here. The swaths thin out over time and a great view of the Thuringian Rhön opens up for us. We pass through the village of Stempfertshausen and move in constant ups and downs through the landscape characterized by calcareous grassland. Finally, at Oberkatz, it gets noticeably steeper again and we have to slow down a bit. When we come across the "Rhönautobahn", the Milseburgweg, we have a magnificent view of Thuringia and Hesse. The wind blows at least as terrificly up here! Finally it goes between fields to the hamlet of Geba, which seems deserted. 😶 Via the brittle tar road, again with a good 300° panorama, we finally reach our starting point. The Bergstübchen with its large beer garden invites you to stop by. The parking spaces on the Geba are plentiful. You can start the tour here!
