Like every year, today we ran the Kreuzberg Tour as a Christmas Eve version in the “best weather”. We already had a snowstorm, sunshine and fog, but today for a change there was a rainstorm, 7° plus and paths that were actually streams. I've never seen so much water in my life 😅 But maybe a little slower, we still managed to complete this tour, even though we were knocked down two or three times because the surface was really slippery in an uncontrollable way 😅 My better half and I are of the opinion that there is no better way to celebrate Christmas Eve! One must also praise the kiosk at the monastery parking lot, which was open and offered really excellent bratwurst and punch at fair prices and very good quality. So Merry Christmas and a healthy start into the new year🍀
Every year again ... I do the extra tour Kreuzberg on Christmas Eve. Recorded for the first time this year. The Rhön is a wonderful hiking paradise with many great corners. I love the Kreuzberg the most. The mood in the woods is wonderfully sublime, especially in winter, and seeing St. Kilian with his cross raised through the fog is goose bumps even for me as an atheist. Great tour, everyone who doesn't know it, absolutely must hike!
Started from the Irenkreuz, it should be the extra tour to the Kreuzberg today. What can I say! Very nice! Just too many people upstairs and slouching down the mountain 😉 but the beer is really delicious 😋
Today, one of the extra tours in the Rhön was on our schedule📄, the Kreuzberg tour❌⛰️. We parked🚐 in the paid parking lot🅿️ at Kreuzberg (24h - 5€). From there, it was only a few meters↔️ to Franconia's highest bus stop🚏and to the Franciscan monastery⛪️, which are located directly below the summit of the second highest mountain⛰️ in the Bavarian Rhön. We walked🚶🏼♀️➡️🚶🏼➡️the tour clockwise🔁, so we had to climb the stairs with their 2️⃣9️⃣4️⃣ steps up to the❌⛰️ immediately after the start. The round trip🔄 was very well signposted🤩 and the paths were easy to walk on despite the autumnal weather🍂🍁🍄🟫⛅️👍🏻. We also discovered some photo opportunities📸💪🏻. The last three kilometers of the 1️⃣3️⃣km long Kreuzberg tour went steadily uphill↗️🫣. After the climb, we stopped at the top to get some refreshment after the tour🥨🥓🌭🍺🥤. On the way back🔙 to the car park🅿️, we climbed the steps again to experience the sunset🌅 from the Kreuzberg summit. 🚶♂️ Kreuzberg Extra Tour – Holy Mountain of the Franconians The Kreuzberg Extra Tour is one of the most popular hikes in the Rhön region and combines nature, culture, and enjoyment in a very special way. The starting point of the tour is the hiking car park at the foot of the Kreuzberg, from where you embark on a varied circular hike. The trail leads through idyllic mixed forests 🌲, across expansive meadows, and panoramic heights that offer magnificent panoramic views of the Rhön region. Rest areas invite you to pause and enjoy the beauty of the landscape. The expansive views across to the Wasserkuppe and deep into the Grabfeld region are particularly impressive. 🏞️ Highlight: Kreuzberg Monastery The undisputed highlight of the hike is a visit to Kreuzberg Monastery. Founded by the Franciscans in 1681, the monastery remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day and is also known as the "Holy Mountain of the Franconians." At the summit rise three monumental crosses ✝️✝️✝️, visible from afar and offering breathtaking views. In the monastery grounds, hikers can not only stop for a break at the pilgrimage church, but also enjoy very special specialties. The famous Kreuzberg beer has been brewed here for over 250 years according to an old Franciscan recipe 🍺. In the beer garden or the monastery tavern, you can enjoy hearty Rhön dishes such as snack platters, bratwurst, or soups 🥨. Those who wish to stay longer will also find simple guest rooms in the monastery for overnight stays. 🌳 Nature & Culture Hand in Hand The extra tour continues through pristine forests, past colorful mountain meadows and small chapels. Especially in spring and summer, the landscape around the Kreuzberg unfolds in all its splendor. New views of the surrounding Rhön Mountains continually open up, ensuring the tour never becomes monotonous. 🟡Conclusion: The Kreuzberg Extra Tour is more than just a hike—it's an experience for all the senses. Breathtaking nature, deep-rooted culture, and genuine hospitality make the "Holy Mountain of the Franconians" a special destination. Whether you're a pilgrim, a connoisseur, or a nature lover—everyone will find something to their liking here. 👉 And in the end, the same applies here: start, slow down, and enjoy! 🌞🥾🍺
The Kreuzberg tour is highly recommended. Beautiful Rhön in all its facets. Stop at the Kreuzberg monastery, always nice 😉🍺. However, it is sad to see that the Gemündener Hütte is no longer open at the weekend (only for groups who have made a reservation). The Neustädter Haus is also permanently closed 😪
Extra tour "Kreuzbergtour" started from the parking lot "Irisches Kreuz" in the direction of Kilianshof! Stop at the Kreuzberg monastery after 2/3 of the way!

The route on the Kreuzberg saved here does not correspond to the signage on site; it omits the summit.
