The Rotes Moor extra tour takes us from the depths of the Rotes Moor to the Heidelstein, which can be seen from afar. We promise exciting insights and outlooks!
Let's start our sporty extra tour Rotes Moor at the Moordorf car park. A plank path takes us into a mysterious scenery with dense ferns and dark moor eyes. The information boards tell us exciting stories.
Now we descend along the Feldbach down the rustic cascade gorge. Mighty rocks, rushing water and dense forests give us a unique experience of nature. Further on we reach the high plateau between Wasserkuppe and Rotem Moor. We head for the Moorwiese car park via the Grumbachtal with a magnificent view of the Ulstertal and the Mathesberg. From there we continue the hiking experience over the Ottilienstein and through the Kesselrain nature reserve to the Schornhecke car park.
Now the Heidelstein greets us with its transmission mast. We enjoy a fantastic view of the "Lange Rhön" to the Thuringian Forest in the "Swabian sky". After a short distance downhill we reach our starting point at the "Haus am Roten Moor".
Tip:
Let's show our appreciation for the achievements of this traditional association at the Rhönklub memorial on Heidelstein.

Today the special Rotes Moor tour should be hiked. The tour started at the Red Moor, which was only lightly visited due to the weather. The Red Moor is beautiful and really a great destination. We continued over the Cascade Gorge. Rushing water followed the path. We continue over the Mathesberg to the Moorwiese car park. Here I was greeted by the sign “Wolfsgebiet” and I was a bit uneasy. The rest of the route led past the Ottilienstein and through the Kesselrain nature reserve. The last kilometers were rewarded with a fantastic view all the way to the Wasserkuppe. The round was very varied. Today the weather - storms and rain - as well as the partly very soggy ground was a challenge. There was water on some of the paths, so my shoes sank. I would like to do this tour again in dry weather.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful laps in the Rhön 😊
The tour starts at the Schornhecke parking lot. It leads through the forest to the Ulsterquelle spring and continues through the beautiful Rhön landscape. Later, you reach the beautiful Cascade Gorge and hike through it. The route continues to the Roter Moor and the Heigelstein. Overall, a very beautiful and typical Rhön hike with plenty of nature and beautiful views.
The Rhön is beautiful, even in the fog 😁 Beautiful tour with the highlights of the Cascade Gorge and the boardwalk through the Red Moor and ending at the NaBu House 🍻
Starting point: hiking car park at the Red Moor (Moordorf, Gersfeld).
Actually, it's only 18.1 km, but we missed the turnoff at the cascades. 🫣 The trail is marked with a "Red R" and is well signposted. 😎
What a wonderful tour around Rote Moor in the autumnal Rhön.
Very nice, varied, long tour. Start/end is the 🅿️ moor meadow. This doesn't offer many parking options, so it's "safer" to start at the 🅿️ Chimney hedge, for example. The route is consistently marked with the red R. Also see hiking signs on the route.
