The wild animal path leads through the fairytale pheasantry forest at the old hunting lodge and invites animal lovers, natural scientists and landscape lovers to take a walk.

Romp, listen, sneak in the forest - smell, see and feel ancient trees. The wildlife trail is a real adventure, especially for children (but of course adults too). You start at the old hunting lodge Fasanerie of Duke George I of Saxe-Meiningen. Enchanted by the fairytale pheasantry forest, he had it built in the 18th century. But don't worry, the forest hasn't lost any of its magic since then. But on the contrary! Some of the trees have been standing side by side for 400 years and encourage you to think and fantasize. The natural scientist Johann Matthäus Bechstein also liked to travel here. The educational trail there was named in his honor and equipped with explanatory display boards on the trees and bushes.

You continue walking through the Kastanien-Allee and discover various wooden sculptures that are exhibited along the way. After that, all animal fans say: "Pay attention!" Because you come to the wild boar gates and game enclosures and can even commit to an oversized aviary. If you haven't had enough by then, you can then make a short detour to the World Peace Cross on the Dachsberg. To do this, walk past the hunting lodge again and, after crossing the street, you will come to a former border tower and accessible bunkers. A real highlight at the end of the tour is the fantastic panoramic view of the beautiful Rhön.

Tip:
Observing wild animals is particularly exciting for children – the old trees stimulate their imagination. In addition, the near-natural paths are also easily accessible with an all-terrain pushchair.

Fasanerie Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Historical Site

The Fasanerie hunting lodge was formerly used by the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen as a hunting lodge and summer house. After the construction of the castle and a pheasantry around 1790, magnificent bonfires and hunts were held here. Today you can treat yourself to a break in the restaurant.
