The second circuit of the border crossing route starts in Glandorf and initially leads you through wide and flat fields towards the north and thus to the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest, whose mountains on the horizon provide the beautiful backdrop for this tour. Accordingly, the route is somewhat hilly, but since you only "scratch" the Teuto, you can expect only short climbs that are doable for everyone. The beautiful towns of Lienen, Bad Iburg, Hilter and Bad Laer also invite you to linger a little.

In the cozy little towns you have all kinds of opportunities to relax. Treat yourself to a break at the brine inhalation pavilion in Bad Laer, take a long walk around the graduation towers in Bad Rothenfelde or enjoy yourself in one of the cozy cafés or restaurants. In Bad Iburg, it is worth visiting the treetop path with a fantastic view of the castle and the surrounding area. In the Kneipp adventure park you can relax your legs and be reminded of the motto of the tour at the boundary stone circle - a collection of boundary stones that were found in the surrounding forest.

From here you cycle to the border triangle, which was once formed by the county of Ravensberg and the bishoprics of Münster and Osnabrück. The border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony still runs here today. An old boundary stone with an inscription commemorates the historical border, which is still important today.

You cycle further through the flat meadows and fields until you get back to the starting point of the tour. Of course, you can decide for yourself where you want to start the tour from. If you want to travel by train, Hilter is a good starting point. There you will find a good train connection, for example from Osnabrück.

The spa park, with its Glockensee lake, small thermal baths, and water treading pool, is ideal for a break. There are numerous benches and a playground for children.

The County of Ravensberg and the Bishoprics of Münster and Osnabrück met here in the Middle Ages and formed the border triangle. The state border between the kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia also passed here.

Today the course corresponds to the district borders of Gütersloh and Osnabrück as well as the state borders between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. Street names such as "An der Nord border", "Grenzweg" or "Zum Dreiländereck" are reminiscent of the historical importance of this border.

Harkotten Castle

Highlight • Castle

Harkotten Castle is a rare double castle (Castle von Ketteler and Castle von Korff) and in private use. However, you can stop by the garden café there for coffee and cake and take a look at the facility from the outside.

A nice invitation to do the same with a leisurely friend. Just stop, enjoy the beautiful landscape, linger a bit and decelerate.

October 3, 2024,Rundkurs 2: Grenzsteine am Dreiländereck – Grenzgängerroute Teuto-Ems ab Glandorf
Today we tackled the "Teuto-Ems border crossing route". The route crosses the Münsterland park landscape, the Osnabrück region and leads to East Westphalia.
It is divided into 3 stages. We started with the 2nd and set off in Glandorf. It was quite cool 😬, but dry. The route mostly ran along quiet back roads. There were a few forest paths, …

The Border Crosser Route: Cycling without borders – this tour means it literally, as the entire circuit not only alternates between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, but also frequently crosses district and municipal borders. But don't worry, there are no entry regulations or border controls to be expected. 😉It goes through the beautiful Münsterland park landscape, through the Osnabrück region …

Twelve of the friends from the Wednesday tour gathered today for a big tour together in Bad Laer.
From there we started part of the cross-border commuter tour towards Bad Iburg. There we left the Genzgänger tour to reach Lienen via Holperdorf and the serpentines. There was a long break in the ice cream parlor opposite the House. Strengthened, we …
