Gravel riding

This route is made for the gravel bike and starts in Oud-Rekem. Actually, this is the first loop of the Strade komoot route, which I made during the lockdown and is also in this Collection.

This northern loop is completely car-free. In addition to the gravel roads, you only cycle on bicycle paths and there are no motorways involved. Apart from some false flat strips, this loop is almost flat.

The first part follows the cycle path in the direction of Maaseik. You follow the cycle path along the Meuse and regularly turn up a gravel path through the floodplains of the Meuse. This way you feel even more connected to nature along the Maas. You pass the small village of Heppeneert, which is a popular pilgrimage site. Be careful not to fool anyone here.

Once in the Hoge Kempen you cycle deep through the forest on beautiful gravel roads. On quiet days you really don't meet anyone and that makes cycling so special here. Where in the Netherlands and Belgium can you cycle for so long without meeting anyone?

After you have imagined yourself alone in the world, you will finish again in Oud-Rekem. Enjoy a nice terrace or restaurant here before returning home.

This route resembles the "Hoge Kempen and Maas floodplains for the gravel bike" of almost 90 kilometers. However, this route follows the Maas for a longer period of time. This gives you a nice variety in the route; you start with the Grensmaas and cycle back via the Hoge Kempen. Ideal with a southerly wind if you depart from Oud-Rekem.

Lovely path through the floodplains of the Meuse. Please note, at high water the chance of wet feet is a lot greater...

Maasweerden Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Along the Meuse you will find many nature reserves, such as Maasweerd. These areas serve as natural flood areas, because the Meuse can regularly overflow its banks here. Especially for bird lovers it is a small paradise: you can easily see herons, geese and various other water birds. A beautiful place to quietly walk or cycle and fully enjoy nature.

Bergerven Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Between 2007 and 2010, the Bergerven nature reserve was developed. This nature development project further increased the natural value of the area. Space was created for wooded wet and dry heathlands, heathland grasslands and (broom) shrubs. Striking plants now include red bell heather and floating water plantain. Headlands and shallow zones were created along the northern part of the largest lake. An ideal habitat for amphibians.

The extensive inventory list shows that Bergerven is doing well in terms of birds. While walking, you can stop at the birdwatching hut and look for waders, dabbling ducks and diving ducks. And the extras such as the sand martin wall and an artificial nest for the osprey will only benefit that wealth.

We try to ensure the open landscape of the Bergerven nature reserve by extensive grazing with Galloway cattle and Konik horses, mowing and coppicing.

'Fast' gravel ride from the box of Kempen's finest. Along the Maas alternating asphalt and gravel. Through the Kempen via gravel back with a few asphalt connecting parts. Easy gravel ride without technical parts. Pay close attention to the wind direction. With a northerly wind it is better to ride the other way around so that the terrain along the …
