Hiking

Original forest, partly winding paths and wonderful views line this circular route.

Right at the beginning a steep path leads you up the mixed oak forest. Done - the hardest part is behind you. From the area of the national park information board (intersection with asphalt road), a wonderful natural beech forest becomes the focus of observation. This piece of forest has been left to its own devices since the 1970s and gives us a glimpse into the future of the Eifel National Park: mixed deciduous forests of various ages, predominantly made of beech with lots of standing and lying dead wood. The home of many animals, plants and organisms. Just as interesting are the fungi that populate dead trees with their fruiting bodies. The further course of the route is no less exciting. Your hiking trail - a former farm road - is slowly being reclaimed by the forest. This is followed by a dense, shady path through young beech forest, which takes you via a connecting path to the forester's house Dedenborn with its orchard and a view of the distance. Then you will find winding paths to the edge of the village of Dedenborn and come across the Eifelsteig, which leads you past idyllic hay meadows back to the starting point.

From Wolfshügel at a height of 360 meters above sea level, the view extends in a northerly direction over the town of Einruhr and into the valley of the Rur dam. Some well-preserved half-timbered angled courtyards in an elaborate architectural style are worth seeing in the Einruhr resort. The place is ideal as a starting point for a visit to the nearby Eifel National Park.

The Rurtalsperre consists of the Obersee visible in the foreground and the main lake to the north. With a basin volume of around 200 million cubic meters, it is the largest of the 9 dams in the northern Eifel. The reservoirs are used to provide drinking and industrial water, flood protection, low water recharge and electricity generation. The main lake of the Rurtalsperre, the "Rursee", also offers many opportunities for recreational use.

The construction of the dam in the northern Eifel began around 1900. The decisive factor was the unbalanced flow of the Rur. Again and again, catastrophic floods caused great damage along the river. In the dry months in summer, however, the Rur carried so little water that households, industry and agriculture could not be adequately supplied.

St. Nicholas Church Einruhr

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Einruhr is dedicated, is one of the most popular saints of all, along with Saint Martin. Almost every child in Germany - and far beyond - should know his commemoration day, December 6th.
On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes or boots in front of the door - which of course had to be cleaned with great care - so that they could be filled with gifts by St. Nicholas during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for the children to put out a small amount of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).

Trail Reviews

Monika Kuhl 🚶‍♀️🌲🌳🌻⛰️🌞🥾🥾🌍
June 19, 2025, Wilder Wald von Heute und Morgen - Nationalpark Eifel

A very beautiful, varied trail, created by the Eifel National Park, hiked today in sunny weather. It's especially recommended in hot weather, as it's nice and cool under the trees. 🤗🌞

We arrived in Einruhr today in perfect hiking weather, where we stayed in a nice guesthouse. Today's "introductory round" was beautiful with a few meters of elevation and wonderful viewpoints. Yippee, finally back in the Eifel.🌞🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️⚒️
