Hiking

On the three and a half kilometer long vital path in Holzgau you will get to know the five elements of Kneipp's health theory. Information boards along the way and some stations provide information for anyone who wants to know more. And by the way, beautiful panoramic views and one of the longest suspension bridges in Austria await you.

The start is in Holzgau, which is also considered the pearl of the Lech Valley due to the many lavishly painted houses. You stroll through the pretty town and start the ascent on the outskirts. Your path leads you across a mountain meadow and you will soon have great views of the Lech Valley. After almost a kilometer, you can take a breather at a small refuge and enjoy the view.

Soon afterwards you will reach the 200.5 meter long Holzgau suspension bridge. It stretches over the Höhenbach Gorge at a height of more than 100 meters and is therefore not for people with a severe fear of heights. With a view of the valley, you continue hiking along the mountainside and over a picturesque mountain meadow landscape. Again and again, benches along the way invite you to take short breaks. Finally your path leads you downhill again and through the forest back to Holzgau. You can end your hike with a stop in one of the many restaurants or cafés in town.

Holzgau Suspension Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

At a length of 200.5 meters and a height of 110 meters, the suspension bridge near Holzgau crosses the Höhenbach Gorge. The detour here is particularly worthwhile when it is dark, because then the bridge shines in great lighting.

In contrast to some other spectacular suspension bridges, the suspension bridge in Holzgau is freely accessible and can be walked on for free.

June 22, 2025, AT* Holzgau im Lechtal, mit Themenweg und Hängebrücke

The Lech Valley, said to be one of the most beautiful valleys in Austria, is truly beautiful. Following the Lech River on the B198, we reach Holzgau, where we find the largest suspension bridge in Austria. At 200.5 meters long, it is the longest free pedestrian suspension bridge in Austria. The ascent from the village is mostly through shady forest. The path is beautifully landscaped. The themed trail is also interesting.

A great way, with many play stations for the children. You have to see the suspension bridge.

Wild and free. This is how the Lechtal Valley presents itself. Not only because of the "Last Wild One." But also because of the steep, rugged, and seemingly unapproachable peaks. While the wild Lech River paints its patterns on the valley floor of the Lechtal landscape below, the flanks of the grassy and rocky mountains rise steeply into the Lechtal sky. As steep as the tops of the church steeples in the villages of this magnificent landscape. But anyone who thinks that the Lechtal Valley, with its many side valleys, is "only wild," is mistaken. The Lechtal Valley also has a gentle and tame side. Numerous easy hiking options, such as the bike tour around the Lechzopf, are proof of this. And also the hike on the Vitalweg trail near Holzgau.
