Hiking

In the footsteps of Charlemagne: The eight-kilometer-long Imperial Palace Trail takes you back in time. Along the route, you'll discover historical sites such as the Aula Regia, the Heidesheim Gate, and the Saalkirche (Hall Church). All sites that represent a significant construction period of the Imperial Palace. You can learn more about the exciting history of the palace complex, built in the 8th century, in the museum at the Imperial Palace, where this tour also begins.

But it's not just historians who get their money's worth on the Imperial Palace Trail. Charlemagne brought red wine to Ingelheim, and the landscape is therefore dominated by winegrowing. You'll hike up the vineyards and enjoy stunning views from the Mainzer Berg into the Rhine Valley. The wineries along the trail invite you to take a leisurely break, including a tasting of the local wine.

You'll continue walking at the top until you descend again to Nieder-Ingelheim. As befits a day of hiking, a cozy stop at the end is a must. Simply find a spot at one of the wineries and let the day end in a relaxed manner.

Ingelheim Imperial Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

The entire Palatinate complex is embedded in a residential area, so that there are interesting views at many corners, but they are not always easy to recognize or find. It is best to start the tour at the market square, there is an audio guide in the visitor center.

Hall church Ingelheim

Highlight • Religious Site

The Romanesque hall church in Ingelheim-Mitte (formerly Nieder-Ingelheim) is located in that of Emperor Karl d. Size Imperial Palace founded at the end of the 8th century. The palatine chapel was discovered during excavations north of the church garden in 2003/04.
The construction of the hall church could be dated to the middle of the 10th century, i.e. the time of the Ottonian rulers. Emperor Barbarossa initiated the figurative ornamentation visible today (capitals, face masks, scroll friezes). '

The name comes from the location of the church in the "hall" an area of the Nieder-Ingelheim district, in which the Ingelheimer Kaiserpfalz used to be.

A short circular hiking trail starting near the Imperial Palace in Ingelheim with sweeping views of the "Eebsche" side. The surface is a bit too sealed for me, but that's almost typical for hikes around Ingelheim. Anyone looking for a short hike that's also accessible on rainy days will find it here.

A nice leisurely round with panoramic views and picnic opportunities.

At the beginning there were interesting facts about the Imperial Palace.

There are enough parking spaces at the starting point.

Since rulers during the early to the beginning of the late Middle Ages (roughly 500–1250 AD) did not have a fixed seat of government, so-called palatinates (from the Latin palatium = palace) were of great importance as representative places of rule for a limited time.
