This bike tour takes you to the south of Münster and is dedicated to the topic of water in its various forms. From the city center you drive to the Dortmund-Ems Canal and can take a look into the city harbor.

You haven't left the city completely behind you yet, but you are already driving through idyllic nature. The village of Angelmodde is where the Angel flows into the Werse. A special highlight in the village is the church, which has kept its simple appearance for centuries.

For the next few kilometers you follow the loops of the Werse. You can stop again and again and listen to the babbling of the brook on a bench. In Albersloh you have another nice view of the place and the Werse before you leave the river.

You drive straight through the forest until you reach the Hohe Ward waterworks. The round building from 1906 proves that functionality and design do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Before you drive back to Münster along the Dortmund-Ems Canal, you pass the Hiltruper See. Since it is used to produce drinking water, you cannot bathe in it, but you can relax on its bank. And if you need to cool off, the outdoor pool is right next to it.

Haus Lütkenbeck

Highlight • Historical Site

The buildings in the southeast of the city near the harbor on Lütkenbecker Weg are the remains of a baroque complex built between 1695 and 1720. The chapel of the house is still used for church services and concerts. Originally built at the gates of Münster, the buildings are now within the closed settlement area, but are largely protected from city noise by the Telgenbusch and Sternbusch forest areas.

St. Agatha's Church, Angelmodde

Highlight • Religious Site

The simple church in Angelmodde was dedicated to Saint Agatha. It is one of the last Romanesque churches in the Münsterland, which has hardly been changed over the centuries.

Werse Cycle Path at Berl Bridge

Highlight • Cycleway

The Werseradweg is really an excellent route. Very rural with many informative signs along the way and opportunities to relax. Very nice route and well marked. A procedure is practically impossible.

Werse River in Albersloh

Highlight • River

The Werse has particularly little current and it is difficult to see in which direction it is now flowing. The Werse has its source near Beckum and runs via Ahlen and Drensteinfurt to Münster. The Werse, which is 67 kilometers long, flows into the Ems behind Münster.

Hohe Ward Waterworks

Highlight • Monument

Beautiful, old waterworks from 1906 in the middle of the Hohe Ward water protection area. There are also beautiful cycling and hiking trails in a tree-rich area.

Hiltruper Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Hiltruper See is an artificially created body of water. Either you just walk along the beautifully laid out circular route, or you make a detour to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The forest and climate nature trail in the Hohe Ward, right next to the lake, is also recommended.

April 11, 2024,Münster 1: Zum Golfplatz Café 9
Nice first tour in Münsterland, along the Werse and later through the muddy forest to the "Historic Waterworks Hohe Ward" and to the "Golf Course Cafe 9". At the end of the round we head to Stadthafen 1 for a beer.

Very nice route, especially on the Werseradweg and the DO Emskanal. There are currently some construction sites after Albersloh with diversions for cyclists too. The route here is really bad (sand, sand, sand!!)

The Münster campsite is 8 km from the city center on the Werse river. A beautiful bike path follows the river to the suburbs of Angelmodde and Albersloh. We went back through the forest and along the Dortmund-Ems Canal. A short walk through the city center, then shopping and replenishing our supplies and back to the square.

Today to the Werse. 🚴🚴‍♂️

Starting point Wilhelmstraße, past the Schloßplatz to the promenade.

The Send (fair) is currently taking place on the Schloßplatz.

Above Lake Aasee we drove through the promenade, via Wolbeckerstrasse and Schillerstrasse to the Dortmund Ems canal.

Various construction sites near the waterworks. Diversion partly via bridle path 😮‍💨
Beautiful, varied tour through fields and forests..

It was a nice round along the Werse to Albersloh and then over to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. A beautiful lake and heathland near Hiltrup. From there on into the city past the new city harbor with its restaurants in the city to the cathedral.

Despite the holiday (All Saints' Day) there wasn't that much walking on the Werse. It was also good to cycle here to Albersloh, then over through a lot of forest (Hohe Ward) to the Dortmund Ems Canal, there too a very good bike path up to Schmitz Kühlken, but we wanted to stay on the canal despite the construction site. …
