A fantastic, varied tour lies ahead of you. You start at Zwiefalten Monastery, whose minster is one of the most important late baroque buildings in Germany. After a few minutes of cycling you will reach the Danube, which meanders through the landscape here as a young river.

A short detour takes you to the Obermarchtal monastery, then it goes to Rechtenstein. From the bank of the Danube you have a great view of the tiny place with the imposing ruins of the former double castle.

In Lauterach you change the valley and now follow the Lauter. It flows through an unmistakably beautiful landscape between pretty villages and beautiful nature. You leave the Lautertal in Indelshausen and drive up to Zwiefalter Ach, which you follow to your starting point at Zwiefalten Monastery. There you can relax after the tour with a cool drink with a view of the monastery.

Obermarchtal Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

One of the greatest cultural treasures in Upper Swabia. The monastery is a gem of Swabian art history and is always worth a detour.

Rechtenstein Castle is a former double castle in the village of Rechtenstein, whose origins date back to the 11th century. The von Stein men lived in one half, the von Rechtenstein men in the other half. From the bike path you have a great view over the Danube to the ruins.

Hoher Gießel Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

A great place where the Lauter rushes like a stream over several steps and small waterfalls. Here it is worthwhile to get off the bike and let the untouched nature work on you.

Beautiful viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

A wonderful view of the Lautertal and also the field cross has a certain charm. The glass angel in the field cross is inconspicuous, but really beautiful.

The Cathedral of Our Lady was once the church of the Zwiefalten Benedictine Abbey. The baroque building is impressive from the outside. But its splendor inside is almost indescribable. Wherever you look, everything is adorned with paintings, figures and other decorative elements. After the eyes have had enough to be amazed, you can then pamper your palate in the monastery brewery.

All I can say is that it is a dream tour. This tour normally includes the Obermarchtal monastery, but we didn't go there because we have already visited it several times. The route is up and down but the beauty of the nature and river landscapes makes up for it. ☀️☀️☀️🚴🚴👁️‍🗨️🌲🌳🏞️

Due to the heavy rain, the Danube burst its banks at the confluence with the great Lauter. There I got my feet wet and unfortunately left my glasses lying around while "drying them out". Therefore the dangling back. The big Lautertal is nevertheless a great highlight.

Christa, Marion, Eberhard and Heinz were cycling. It was very hot and muggy. The plan was to drive from Anhausen an der Große Lauter via Obermarchtal an der Donau to Zwiefalten an der Zwiefalter Ach and then the same route back (approx. 52 km). Along the Lauter you drive again and again in the forest, the temperatures are pleasant there. After Lauterach, a 14% gradient leads down into the Danube valley. The path is wide, but only about 50 cm wide concrete strips lead down to the left and right. In Obermarchtal we visited the beautiful monastery complex. It was pleasantly cool in the monastery church. We rested in the shade in the monastery garden and strengthened ourselves for the onward journey to Zwiefalten. In Zwiefalten, opposite the monastery complex, we went to Café Böck and treated ourselves to an iced coffee. Because of the heat, we decided to drive from Zwiefalten via Hayingen straight back to Anhausen. There were still a few steep climbs to overcome. Still a nice bike ride.
