On this tour you follow the Lone from the source to the mouth and discover unique natural treasures along the river. The 40 kilometer long tour starts at Amstetten train station.

After about a quarter of an hour's drive you will reach the source of the Lone, the Lonetopf in Urspring. The spring is located directly on the bike path in the middle of town and the “pot” shimmers in a variety of blue-green tones. In Lonsee, as the name suggests, a small idyllic lake and the Lion Man await you. You will later visit his cave in the world heritage area in the lower Lone Valley. From now on you follow the river to its mouth.

The Lone Valley is fascinating. You will find bizarre rock formations, prehistoric caves, traces of human life from several millennia in the Bockstein, Hohlenstein and Vogelherd World Heritage caves, all embedded in a wonderful landscape. But the best thing: you won't encounter any annoying traffic on the lonely bike path.

At the height of the Kaltenburg ruins, the Lone flows into the Hürbe and the tour comes to an end. Another special highlight awaits you there, the Charlottenhöhle. It is therefore worth enjoying the tour and dividing it into two parts of the day. You can get back to your starting point by train from Hermaringen. Or you cycle up to Gerstetten and from there on the local railway path back to Amstetten.

Lonetopf (Source of the Lone River)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The lone pot is the source of the lone. Here, more than 200 liters per second gush out of the ground. The water is incredibly clear and shimmers in a fascinating blue.

Fohlenhaus Caves

Highlight • Cave

The resemblance of the Fohlenhaus to a horse sculpture is unmistakable. It is fitting that such a sculpture symbolizes the prehistoric finds in the Lone Valley. In this area of the Lone Valley, the Fohlenhaus with its steeply rising rock needle is a true highlight of the Ostalb.

Here it goes on beautiful, paved roads through the Lone Valley. The surrounding landscape is absolutely idyllic. The combination of both makes this a wonderful bike route.

The ruins of Kaltenburg Castle are located in the Lone Valley between the towns of Hürben and Burgberg in the Heidenheim district in Baden-Württemberg. Larger remains of the wall have been preserved from the high medieval fortifications.

By train to Amstetten, then cycled through the Lone Valley again. The weather was a dream for the end of October. Return by train from Sontheim/Brenz.
