Belchen, Blauen and Schauinsland – these are the three defining peaks of the southern Black Forest. And that's exactly what you'll tackle on this long and quite demanding tour: 148 kilometers and more than 4,200 meters of altitude are on your speedometer at the end of the day.

Taking these three peaks in one day is bold but doable. But it is also clear that this tour requires a fair amount of fitness and stamina. It's not for nothing that Team Telekom used to prepare here for the mountain stages of the Tour de France. You'll hardly find longer climbs in a German low mountain range - but you won't find such beautiful, long and fast descents either! Sounds like carrot and stick? Yes, in a way it is. But at the end of the day, the incredibly beautiful impressions and the pride of having achieved it outweigh it!

The tour begins in Münstertal and it gets straight to the point: you drive along a quiet road through the beautiful valley and soon reach the 1,000 meter altitude mark for the first time that day at the top of the pass on the Kreuzweg. But that's just the warmup mountain! This is followed by the steep ramp to Hochblauen, the long driveway to Belchen and the slightly shorter but tougher climb to Schauinsland, Freiburg's local mountain. You usually drive on really nice, quiet roads - the last 300 meters up to Belchen are even car-free.

Speaking of Belchen: The Belchenhaus serves good pasta - ideal for a snack in between. And if you can no longer motivate yourself to do the Schauinsland afterwards, you can simply skip it and drive straight back to Münstertal after the descent from Belchen. This saves around 50 kilometers and the most toxic climb of the day.

Climb to Haldenhof/Kreuzweg Pass from Münstertal

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

The road through the small Münstertal is definitely recommended. A sharp climb through the alpine-looking valley head quickly brings you close to the 1,000 meter mark, which you just miss at the top of the pass at Gasthof Halde. If you like, you can correct this with the remaining climb to the Way of the Cross. The road is in pretty bad condition in the lower part (12/2022), so the descent requires more caution and is not quite as fun as it would be with better asphalt.

Kreuzweg Pass Summit

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Wonderful pass ride, from Badenweiler with an almost alpine difference in altitude and thanks to the rock faces at the roadside and the Sirnitzalm you sometimes actually feel like you are in the high mountains. At the moment (05/2020) the lower half of the Badenweiler route is in poor shape, the upper half is great, as is the descent to Neuenweg. Also very popular with the motorcycle group.

Summit of Blauen

Highlight • Summit

The southern driveway from Kandern is a full eight kilometers longer than the one from the northwest via Badenweiler, so the gradient here is largely moderate and manageable even for those with less fitness. There is only a steeper ramp with up to twelve percent, but you can gain strength from several village fountains, at least one of which is always in operation - an advantage that the consistently demanding driveway via Badenweiler does not offer. For ambitious drivers, the other direction of travel is generally recommended, especially since the descent to Kandern allows significantly higher speeds due to fewer curves.

Blauen Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Although the pass crossing does not officially bear this name, it is undoubtedly a real mountain pass. Located at an altitude of 936 meters and with a steep ascent from Badenweiler or the more moderate from Kandern, almost 600 meters in altitude have to be overcome in any case. Of course, you can still combine the journey with the Blue Summit and add a few extra meters in altitude.

Charming little road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This inconspicuous side road branches off from the Böllenbachtal in a sharp curve. Very narrow, but very well paved (04/2020), the route climbs gently to moderately in the valley to Wildböllen, then it goes a little steeper and up through the forest until you can roll on an almost flat stretch to the high point above Schönenberg . The journey to Schönenberg is quick. Shortly before the place there is a very sharp serpentine. Down to Schönau it rolls well again. A very recommendable alternative to the country road through the Böllenbachtal, on which it rolls nicely, but which cannot keep up with this alternative in terms of scenic beauty and of course bonus meters in altitude. Of course, the route is also beautiful in the opposite direction. The ascent from Schönau is, however, much more robust than that over Wildböllen.

Ascent to the Belchenhaus

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

From the valley station of the Belchenlift, the old road, which is now closed to motor vehicles, leads the last almost 300 meters up to the Belchenhaus at 1,350 meters above sea level. From the Belchenhaus, which is around 50 meters below the summit, you have a magnificent view of the southern Black Forest, the Rhine Valley, the Vosges and the Swiss Jura. In good weather, you can enjoy the view of the Alpine chain from the Zugspitze to Mont Blanc from here - with a cool (non-alcoholic) wheat beer, for example. Of course, you can also overcome the few meters to the actual Belchen summit on foot (unless the shoes are too race-optimized) and experience the possibly most beautiful view of the entire Black Forest from there.

Attention: At the valley station there is a short gravel passage about 150 meters in length. Then it goes on rough, but impeccable asphalt surface to the summit. It is better to approach the descent a little carefully. The road is good, but due to the lack of cars it is not as clean as usual - you have to expect sand and gravel, especially in the corners.

Stohren Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The small road from the Münstertal up to the Schauinsland is tough, up to 18 percent (but only briefly) but also the 12 to 15 percent in longer sections sometimes drive you out of the saddle. As compensation, there is cool air from the nearby creek and the normally poorest ascent to the Schauinsland as well as a great view in the upper area.

View from Schauinsland

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Schauinsland is 1,284 meters high and is the local mountain of the university town of Freiburg im Breisgau, located on the edge of the southern Black Forest. The drive up to the pass (1,202 meters) is perfect for an after-work ride.
