Road cycling

A touch of adventure accompanies you on this demanding tour for sports enthusiasts and culture lovers. You can expect an intense tour experience through charming valleys, colorful forests and over challenging mountains with panoramic expanses in the midst of the unique nature of the Black Forest. On the way you can spice up your racing bike experience with cultural and culinary highlights.

Start and finish is the small Black Forest town of Schonach. On a quiet, picturesque road you drive yourself warm in the beautiful Schwarzenbachtal. If you haven't had breakfast yet, we can recommend a short detour to the idyllic Reinertonishof near Schönwald, where you can fortify yourself with regional specialties from 11 a.m. Then the tour really gets going: it goes up and down over quiet streets and through picturesque valleys - it is pure racing bike enjoyment!

Whether Linachtal, Friedrichshöhe or the way back via the Groppertal cycle path: racing cycling in the Black Forest can be so beautiful! And if you fancy a few cultural breaks, small detours to Villingen (with its beautiful historic city center and the Franciscan Museum), St. Georgen (with monastery courtyard and linden tree) or Triberg (with the world's largest cuckoo clock) are worthwhile.

Schwarzenbach Valley and Rainertonishof

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The route via Schwarzenbach and Katzensteig is highly recommended for traveling from Schonach to Furtwangen (or vice versa). It is far preferable to the B500.

Katzensteigstraße

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Katzensteigstraße is a highly recommended alternative to the parallel B500 - practically traffic-free, beautifully landscaped and seasoned with a few sporty ramps, the route up and down is a real pleasure. Currently (as of March 2020) the road is in the best condition, the first kilometers to Furtwangen are still wide and two-lane, later the road becomes significantly narrower and takes on more of a dirt road.

Linachtal Scenic Road and Linachtal Dam

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

In the Black Forest there are countless beautiful side valleys that are relatively well developed in terms of transport and are therefore just waiting to be explored on a racing bike. A prime example of this is the Linachtal. Here in the central Black Forest, racing cyclists are not expected to face a terrifying pass, but it is worth mentioning and recommending because of its beauty.

Linachtalsperre Dam

Highlight • Monument

Not just a dam, but a piece of history and a structure that rightfully deserves its protected status. The dam is the first and only arched inline dam in Germany with a sloping water face. While it was actually destined for "controlled decay" in the 1970s, it underwent extensive restoration starting in 2006. It's a fantastic highlight on a road cycling tour (with a scenic approach), but also ideal for family outings, including a visit to the hydropower educational trail that circles the lake.

Friedrichshöhe Ascent and Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

From Unterkirnach it goes up this roller mountain evenly. There is hardly any traffic on the road and the gradient percentages are not too high. During the descent to Vöhrenbach, the view is wonderful and there is even an alpine serpentine to marvel at!

Groppertal Cycle Route

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Groppertal cycle path leads from Peterzell near St. Georgen to Villingen. It is actually a narrower street, but there is very little traffic. The Groppertal is an idyllic, quiet valley. The path is also worthwhile as a starting point for continuing to other valleys, for example to Oberkirnach or Stockwald.

Staude Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

Very good inn, which is perfect as a start or end point for hiking tours. There is also plenty of parking space.

Schonach Village Park

Highlight • Rest Area

Black Forest village in the high valley above Triberg. Many small, rarely used roads invite you to explore the beautiful landscape by racing bike from here.
