The Ahlhorner Fischteiche are located in the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park, the largest nature park in Lower Saxony. They were once created for fish farming to supply the population with fish. Today, the extensive bodies of water form a valuable natural paradise that offers a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. This circular route leads to the most beautiful ponds in the area.
You start at the "Am Karpfen" car park, which also has a picnic area and a playground. Through the forest, you reach the fish ponds, where the observation tower at the Kirchteich offers a first overview of the reed-lined bodies of water. Afterwards, you follow the shore paths and circle the large Schwanensee. Several benches invite you to take a relaxing break with a view of the water.
On the north bank, a narrow path leads you between the Froschteich and the Helenensee through the green undergrowth. On a forest path, you finally pass the Hubertusteich before rejoining your outward path. To conclude, a detour past the "Twelve Apostles", an ancient stone monument, to the fish farm is worthwhile, where you can take home freshly smoked specialties from the Ahlhorner Fischteiche.
