Hiking

Bizarre rocky landscapes, flower-filled meadows, and fern-rich forests characterize this route. Rare animal and plant species, such as falcons and orchids, also find their home here.

Many sights along the route invite you to linger. For example, the Liborius Chapel, from which you have a wonderful view of Echternach and its surroundings, or the Schweineställe, a 300-meter-long and approximately 60-meter-wide gorge with a narrow entrance and exit, as well as the baroque Weilerbach Castle with its beautiful castle gardens based on French models. Not to be forgotten is the Diana Monument in Bollendorf, which commemorates a Roman goddess responsible for protecting the forest and the hunt.

View of Echternach and the Basilica from Liborius Chapel

Highlight • Viewpoint

With the small Liborius chapel in the back you have at this point a particularly beautiful view of Etternach. The basilica rises out of the city, especially at dusk it looks fantastic from here. The small chapel also offers good protection during a rain shower.

Pigsties

Highlight • Gorge

The name "pigsties" for the 300 meter long and up to 60 meter wide gorge is based on the fact that the farmers from Ferschweiler drove their pigs into the gorge in the Middle Ages to fatten them up with acorns and beechnuts. The upper and lower end of the gorge was simply blocked off with cross bars. The Old High German name "Sweigastal" is made up of "sweiga" (pasture) and "stal" (place).

Weilerbach Castle

Highlight • Castle

The small Weilerbach Castle was once built as a summer residence for the abbots of Echternach Abbey. Construction was completed in 1780, but just a few years later, the castle was confiscated by the French government and sold to a private owner.

After it was damaged in World War II, renovation work only began in the 1980s. Today, the castle's rooms are used for cultural events and concerts.

The magnificently landscaped garden, designed in a French style, is also particularly beautiful. The small coach house houses a cozy museum café.

Huel Lee (Hohllay Cave)

Highlight • Cave

The Hohllay Cave with its tunnels and rock formations is a great destination in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The Romans already cut stones from the rock for their building projects and mining continued in the Middle Ages. In particular, millstones were broken from the sandstone rocks. You can still clearly see the traces of the tools on the cave walls.

An impressive gorge!

With its rock faces rising up to 50m on three sides, the gorge is perhaps the most spectacular natural monument in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The structure and the stratification of the Luxembourg sandstone can be seen very well on the rock faces. According to research, the formations were created when blocks of Luxembourg sandstone separated from the sandstone plateau along fissures parallel to the valley. The clayey layer of marl located under the sandstone blocks the penetrating water and causes the sandstone blocks to slide into the valley and be tilted in the process. At the entrance to the gorge, the so-called “Cleopatra's Needle” rises, a high, obelisk-like rock needle.

Fantastic day in Luxembourg 🇱🇺🥾

Pictures say more than words! It was a great day with the best company 😊
We stopped off in Echternach, we had a good time 😋

Our tour started today in Echternach, the oldest city in Luxembourg. Once we crossed the Sûre River, we were back in the German Southern Eifel region. First, however, we headed to the Luxembourg side, into the fantastic Wolf and Devil's Gorge. Then a quick detour to the Wäschekammer (laundry room) and via Weilerbach Castle up to the pigpens. There was …

Today we did the rock path no. 1 from Echternach. It is very beautiful, but also difficult. I don't know how many steps we climbed today. The weather was good. When it's raining or wet, some sections can be almost dangerous. Absolutely worth seeing 😊👋

This time I had packed my rain gear ☝🏻 because the weather was a bit crazy. In Echternach I had sleet. But no matter, it was still beautiful, I just love these rocks.
The advantage of the weather is that you are practically alone in the rock world.

After Bohemian Switzerland, now we discovered Little Switzerland. What a beautiful region, very similar to what we saw last week in the Czech Republic and Germany, but now with a blissful sun instead of buckets of rain! 😎

After a good night's sleep in the Gasthaus - pension zum Golfstübchen apartment and a delicious breakfast we set off. Really a fantastic walk, not too difficult or technical, but with a considerable distance. We deviated from the route after 8-9km to have a cup of coffee in Berdorf (where my cycling life began almost 40 years ago and where …

Viking journey 7801: Müllerthal - simply "fairytale-like".

Hike D starts in Echternach. The free parking lot at the entrance to the town was closed due to construction work. The parking garage next door cost me €3 for 6 hours of parking.
