A true borderline case: This demanding gravel bike tour leads over the Rattendorfer Alm with its famous cheese dairy to Malga Cason di Lanza, the Lanzer Alm in Italy, and then back into the Gailtal valley.
Cheese has been produced in the Gailtal valley since the 14th century, and since 1996 it has been a protected term by the EU. The production of Gailtaler Almkäse „g. U.“ (which officially means „protected designation of origin“) is subject to strict criteria and controls. It is produced, among other places, on the Rattendorfer Alm, which – to strengthen you for the upcoming passes – is approached right at the beginning of this demanding gravel bike tour.
Via the Scotti Chapel, built during World War I, we go on a treasure hunt to Italy. In Attila's Cave, named after him, the legendary Hunnic king is said to have hidden unfathomable riches. "Unfathomable" in the truest sense of the word – no one has found them to this day, but plenty of fossils nearby.
The reward for the many meters of altitude awaits shortly before the end of the tour: Lissi's cool farm ice cream made from the milk of happy Gailtal cows. That makes others happy too.
