Please be aware that the entire West Jetty, including pedestrian and bicycle access along the walkway to the Walton Lighthouse, is currently undergoing significant repairs and is inaccessible. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled essential repair work from December 9, 2025, to February 13, 2026, during which time the jetty will be closed.
Historically, the West Jetty Pathway featured a concrete cap. However, storm damage has caused fracturing of this cap, exposing core stone and displacing armor stone. While repairs are ongoing, the path's surface is impacted. Before these issues, parts had a sand base and disconnected concrete, with some steep areas. The aim of the repairs is to improve the surface and structural integrity, with past plans including broadening, regrading, and paving for better accessibility.
When accessible, the walk offers expansive views of Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean. You can observe the bustling Santa Cruz Harbor with its boats and marinas, harborside restaurants, and the iconic Walton Lighthouse at the end. The jetty is protected by large concrete tetrapods, locally known as "jacks." You'll also pass by Woods Creek Harbor.
As part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the area provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Keep an eye out for seabirds, sea lions, otters, harbor seals, and even dolphins in the waters below.
Parking is typically available near the Santa Cruz Harbor area. Specific parking lots or street parking options would be found around the harbor entrance, though availability can vary, especially during peak times.
Information regarding specific dog rules for the jetty walk itself is limited. However, generally, dogs on a leash are often permitted on public pathways in the Santa Cruz area. It's always best to check local signage upon arrival for any specific restrictions.
Assuming the jetty is open, the Santa Cruz area generally enjoys mild weather year-round. Spring and fall often offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer can be busy, while winter might bring more rain and cooler temperatures. Always check the local weather forecast before planning your visit.
No permits are typically required to walk the jetty itself. The jetty walk is located within the vicinity of Twin Lakes State Beach. While access to the beach itself is generally free, parking in designated State Beach lots may require a day-use fee. Check signs at specific parking areas for current rates.
Due to the current repair work and past storm damage, the pathway's surface is compromised and currently inaccessible. Historically, before damage, parts were paved, and there were plans to make the entire path fully wheelchair accessible. Once repairs are complete, the accessibility is expected to improve significantly, but it's advisable to check the latest conditions before visiting with strollers or wheelchairs.
Yes, the jetty walk is a notable feature that connects to Seabright State Beach. It also serves as a spur of the larger Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail, which is part of the California Coastal Trail. The route itself passes through sections of the Upper Harbor, Broadway-Brommer Multi-Use Trail, and the Jetty Walkway.
Yes, the Santa Cruz Harbor area is home to several harborside restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a meal or a drink with views of the boats and water.
