There are two main starting points. You can park at Kyles Landing for a longer, more challenging hike. Alternatively, for a shorter, easier walk to the falls, you can aim for the parking area near Camp Orr. Be aware that the road to Camp Orr from Highway 74 can be very steep and rough, potentially requiring a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, especially after rain.
The suitability depends on your starting point. If you begin from the parking area near Camp Orr, the hike to the falls is short (0.3 to 0.5 miles round trip) and relatively easy, making it suitable for families and beginners. However, if you start from Kyles Landing, the trail is approximately 4 to 4.4 miles round trip with significant elevation changes, making it a moderate trek better suited for those with some hiking experience.
To see all three cascades of the falls in their full glory, the best time to visit is during the wetter winter and spring seasons. During drier periods, at least two of the falls, fed by a year-round spring, are still visible and beautiful. Late fall and winter also offer good views of the Buffalo River from above when leaves are off the trees.
Dogs are generally allowed on trails within the Buffalo National River, but they must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. Please remember to pack out any waste.
No, there are no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Triple Falls via Kyles Landing Trail or to access the Buffalo National River area. It is a free-to-access national park unit.
The trail offers diverse scenery, including impressive rock formations and bluff formations, especially along the longer route from Kyles Landing. You'll follow a scenic creek leading to the main attraction, Triple Falls (Twin Falls), Buffalo National River, which cascades nearly 48 feet over unique rock formations. Lush greenery often surrounds the falls, and during colder months, you can get good views of the Buffalo River.
The terrain varies significantly. From Kyles Landing, the trail involves wooded sections, can be quite rocky, and includes a substantial 500-foot climb and descent. Getting to the very bottom of the falls from this route can involve steep trails and some scrambling. If starting from the Camp Orr parking area, the terrain is much easier, shorter, and relatively flat.
The length of the hike depends on your starting point. From Kyles Landing, the round trip to Triple Falls is approximately 4 to 4.4 miles. If you start from the parking area near Camp Orr, the hike is much shorter, typically 0.3 to 0.5 miles round trip, making it a quick and easy walk.
Yes, the route to Triple Falls from Kyles Landing is part of the larger Buffalo River Trail. You will be hiking along sections of the Buffalo River Trail for a significant portion of the journey.
If you plan to access the shorter, easier route from the Camp Orr parking area, be prepared for a challenging drive. The road leading to Camp Orr from Highway 74 is known for being very steep and rough. A 4-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended, especially after rain, and you should be mindful of your brakes on the descent. Kyles Landing offers a more accessible road but leads to a longer hike.
Given the varied terrain, especially from Kyles Landing, sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a map or GPS device. If visiting during wetter seasons, rain gear might be useful. For the rough road to Camp Orr, ensure your vehicle is suitable.
