Hiking
Embark on an easy 1.8-mile (2.9 km) hike along the John Kenrick Woods Trail, a serene journey that takes about 47 minutes. You'll experience a gentle elevation gain of 91 feet (28 metres) as you wander through a unique White Pine-Oak Forest, where tall white pines, some nearly two feet in diameter, stand alongside oaks. The paths are soft and quiet, covered with a thick carpet of pine needles, offering a peaceful atmosphere. Keep an eye out for the substantial vernal pool, a temporary body of water crucial for local wildlife, and enjoy glimpses of the Namequoit River and Arey's Pond from designated viewing areas.
This accessible trail is generally considered easy, making it suitable for a casual walk or a quick outing. The main path is double-wide and composed of hard-packed dirt and sand, ensuring a comfortable surface for your hike. You can easily complete the route as a short loop, enjoying the quiet woodlands of this conservation area. Its gentle nature and well-maintained paths make it a pleasant surprise for hikers seeking a relaxed experience on Cape Cod.
The John Kenrick Woods Conservation Area is a significant greenbelt on the lower Cape, vital for groundwater protection and as a wildlife corridor. This area is home to a rare population of American Chestnut trees, reportedly the only location in Massachusetts where they are reproducing in the wild despite widespread blight. Historically, the land was reforested by John Kenrick II, with its tall, straight timber prized for sailing vessels. The trail also follows an old gully trail, known as Mosquito Lane, which was once a cartway dating back to before the 1900s.
